I've gone back and watched it a handful of times and can't quite decide whether it was a good play design/poor execution or bad all the way around.

It's 3rd down, LSU has just called its final timeout so Mizzou has the knowledge that LSU isn't likely to run the ball. What immediately caught my eye was Terrace Marshall offset behind the offensive line. I don't think I remember seeing that prior to this point in the game. Marshall of course was the best offensive threat yesterday so knowing a pass play is coming, Mizzou is likely keying on him especially when he comes out in a formation we hadn't used. Somethings up.

So the play design is to bluff the RPO to Davis-Price, get the ball to TM and have him cruise to the corner of the endzone thanks to Kirklin (btw look closely at Kirklin..he takes 2 defenders out of the play). Problem was Mizzou knew it was likely to be a pass...that linebacker off the edge doesn't bite on the run and immediately drifts back into the throwing lane to break it up.

Ultimately I feel like it wasn't a great situational play. That run fake really gains you no advantage of deception in a clear passing down. Feels more like something that should have been run in an earlier down with a timeout remaining.

ETA: I included a gif but I don't think its appearing.

Marshall walks in. Defender made a good play.

Not sure if it was play design or execution, but the fake of the run was not very good at all. Honestly looks like Brennan rushed it and barely sold the hand off at all and was trying to get the ball out quick to Marshall which is odd execution to me. Who knows how it was coached but the whole thing looks awkward.

Poor execution by Brennan. Knows end is not accounted for so it’s his responsibility to get the ball over him. On next play he poorly executed as well by hesitating and not throwing when Marshal got immediate separation after his cut while looking at him the entire time. No one is stopping Marshal with a layup pass over the DE.

Well, the stupid fricking idiot Linehan should have NEVER ran twice up the middle. You have to take a TO after that, then frick yourself into having to pass. Absolutely no creativity or awareness there, worst possible thing to do.

People complain about Bo, but Linehan is as bad or worst than that hire. He brings NOTHING.

Yeah I noticed the same. Like he was over eager to get the ball out to Marshall as quick as he possibly could. Rushed the fake and probably could have put a little air under that ball and floated it over to TM.

I dont like the idea of going backward in time, but this is still football.

I think its silly to not have a big boy I Form goal line package.

I don’t like the idea of not throwing in the end zone on 3rd down with no timeouts

But, no one actually thinks they are running. That is the problem, Linehan pigeon-holed them by calling shite on 1st and 2nd down.

Hate anything to the short side of the field, that close to the end zone. Unless it is some type of throw back

A) yep, by running on 1st and 2nd downs they were pretty sure we wouldn't risk a run and played pass all the way despite the look pre-snap.
B) can motion Marshall to give Kirklin more room.
C) I'd rather motion Kirklin (jet sweep threat) to give Marshall more room on jump ball on backline or corner.
D) forget about the play fake, we all knew pass. Motion RB out if you're not going to motion Marshall and have him cut DE so he can't get in pass lane.

Yes, we do need an I-Form for these situations. Better yet, forget about the I-F by preserving the run-pass option by throwing on 1st down.

So in leiu of I-F, I'd rather run this same thing out of pistol instead of shotgun. Makes playfake faster and introduces a jet sweep option (instead of just the motion); again, with Kirklin as the motion and Marshall flexed left.

It seemed telegraphed to me - Marshall lined up at H isn’t going to be a lead blocker

I would’ve run again TBH - there would’ve been time to line up quick and run it again on 4th

It should have never come down to 3rd or 4th down. Last night when Bama was on the Ole Miss one, they brought in a defensive lineman and a fullback and lined Harris behind them. Harris bulldozed in to the end zone.

Meanwhile we tried to run it on 1st and 2nd down with a single back and no extra blocking.

Well on 4th and goal... their was a higher % of scoring if he looks at Kirklin crossing. But i get it, all focus was to go to T. Marshall. Only gripe I have on Brennan, is a 1 WR stare down.

Horrible throw by the QB. You can’t throw a bullet right there.

If you’re going to pass do it on 1st or second.

As it was, after the TO, should have brought in an extra lineman and run it twice. There was time with two plays called.

All in all I would have run it 4 times.

Hindsight 20/20 the play out of that set was fake left roll right have Mcmath fade to corner and Tory Carter make contact at line and drag across middle of end zone in direction of Mcmath. Pick easier throw

With an OL they had gotten their shite pushed in all day by the Mizzou second and third team. Why did we think all of a sudden we were going to move them back?
