He would wear in class this tiny baseball cap with the biggest bill on it. No idea where he got it. He was shifty, but not that fast in the open field. He would get run down on long stretches!

Honestly, not sure there has been a better LSU running back. Game is different now, so it is hard to compare, but I think he probably had more “holy crap did you see that” moves than any other LSU back I’ve seen.

If Dalton ran behind the line Smith did he would be the NFL all time rushing leader and 1st ballot HOFer.

If not for Dalton, Eric Martin might never have been the star he turned out to be.

Really? How so? ET was a beast and best blocking WR back then. He also was a better pro overall, although both had excellent careers. Dalton was great but benefited from a very good OL 3 of 4 years. ET was a Beast before Dalton and is sill last Tiger to return a kick off in Tiger Stadium...

Hilliard was an absolute beast. Shifty and hit the hole like a rocket.

I have been going to tiger Stadium since 1957. He is my all time favorite running back. So much fun to watch.

Dalton had 4.6 speed in the 40, not fast by any means. He was shifty and was hard to get a hold of in the open field. LSU was the only D1 offer he got out of HS and he was told by a lot of the DII schools he was too small to play in the SEC. But, the one thing that separated him from other backs was his vision. A play could be to the left and he could see a hole open up on the right. If Dalton would of had more speed he'd be in the HOF right now. If Harvey Williams would of had Daltons vision he'd be in the HOF right now. Having that kind of vision makes or breaks a RB, especially in the NFL.

From the beginning of the freshman year I was waiting every time he ran the sweep to the sides that this would be the play he gets smashed. He managed to dodge almost every bullet. Shifty cannot express how to describe him. He was legit.

Saw him break a Notre Dame players ankles at Tiger stadium. Was hoping Clyde was gonna be in that mold.Dalton hit the hole then cut.Clyde would do himself some good and watch some film.I do believe they have similar skill sets.

He was one of the greatest players to wear aTiger uniform. He reminded me of a speed ice skater. Low to the ground and vert shifty. Great Saints player. Will go in the Saints Hall of Fame if he is already there.

Honestly I think you hit in on the head. We have alot faster backs but his vision was unbelievable. The lower half strength and his vision have been the best I have seen at LSU.

My favorite all-time Tiger and form my money the best all around back to ever play here.

he could make you miss, he could run you over, I would say only Faulk would rival him catching the ball out of the backfield and I'd also say without hesitation he was the best pass blocking halfback I've ever seen here and I go back to 1973.

No he did not have sprinters speed but he did take one to the house for 85 yards vs. Washington and in the Sugar Bowl for 70 against Nebraska but he barely stepped out of bounds so it was nullified.

But for me bottom line he did everything very well and IMHO a couple of things better than any Tiger RB that ever played.

When comparing other backs to him he is referred to as “the one whose name same shall not be spoken.”

Good luck finding video of the first man tackling him.

Yep, when he got here he was the fourth rated back in the class. Gary James was the No. 1 Back in the country and the showcase of the class but even Karl Bernard from Catholic and Gene Lang were rated ahead of Dalton.

All four backs in that class played in the NFL and for more than a cup of coffee but again in the NFL, Dalton was better.

He was the Saints all-time leading rusher until Duece broke his record.

But when he go here he outshone them all. Stovall said no one could tackle him in practice.

James was good and played in the NFL but Dalton was better. No one who saw them will dispute that. As I said above, IMHO best all around back I've ever seen at LSU and my memory goes back to 1973.
