Maybe. You still have to break down even if you're late. Guys are late often, but you still need to approach and transfer accordingly. The turn last night was great, but it was 2B side of SS - the harder ones are 3B and 3B side of SS. It's just a weird angle.

ETA: Also, the tendency is to throw the ball up the line for a new 2B. What I'm describing is very rare. In other words, he knows what he has to do, he just hasn't had enough reps yet.

I truly believe the time he lost when he was hurt is having something to do with this right now. He didn't have the same practice out there so he is having to knock the rust off. I think he will get it together as the season progresses.

However, if he does continue to struggle and commit these errors I do believe Coach Johnson will slide Doughty to SS. But with how Thompson is batting I don't think he will take him out of the lineup. He or Merrifield would have to move to 2nd.

Let just hope that Thompson figures it out and continues to progress as the season moves forward.

I understand what you are saying now. Regardless of the problem he was having it is not something to have to worry about. He will be fine there if that is where he stays all season.

That was Cranford’s first error in college if I remember correctly. His glove isn’t a liability.

After Thompson gained good experience last season, certainly much stronger defense than he has displayed thus far this system is expected.

Hopefully he and the coaching staff can figure things out.

2. Doughty - played there in scrimmages but isn't really an upgrade defensively. It would open a spot for someone like Bianco or Safford at 2nd base. Not sure this would be a long term solution.

Doughty would not be one of the first guys I consider at SS. He just doesn't have good range, has been shaky on transfers at 2B, and doesn't have a particularly good arm for the position. JMO. We honestly don't have a lot of great options there outside of Thompson, and he's been hitting pretty well thus far, so I'm willing to give him time to get his yips worked out. Of the guys on the roster right now, Cranford and Bianco have more game experience than anyone else at SS outside of Thompson. Bianco has 7 starts at SS (all last year) and Cranford 11 (all in 2020). Thompson has all the talent he needs at the position. I think it's pretty clearly mental for him at the moment.

They would of been better off with me out there and i’m serious. Definitely time to worry. I’m scared everytime him and Merry field a groundball and they look horrible everytime.

It’s not, but his range & throwing arm are average. Which is why Thompson will have a long tong rope

Cranford was used as a defensive sub last year and looked terrible at times. I think he's a good defender but he's not elite. Look at a guy like Taylor Young at La Tech - he went over 50 games without an error at 2B last season - he's made like 2 or 3 errors in 2+ seasons - that's elite. And, Cranford can't hit at all.

We should have held onto Hal Hughes.

Thompsons glove is suspect but he has great tools. Cannon arm and range. We don't have many options. He will just get reps and get better.

Heh, awesome.

In all seriousness, Simon's injury really hurt us.

I don’t think it’s time to replace Thompson, but if that time comes maybe one of the freshmen, Leto or Simon, could take over.

Simon is out and Leto is no MI.

All of which is dependent on and secondary to the quality of the feed...footwork can be the best in the world until you have a late throw forcing you to come across the bag or a bad throw forcing you to adjust receiving and then having to throw across your body.

I haven't said much because I would want to look at the plays again, but Doughty might have been perfectly fine until he wasn't because of poor feeds.

But Thompson started last year at SS, we're not talking about inserting a different player here to sub offense for defense. This is more a question of what's going on with the guy who committed 15 errors in 62 games last year already committed 6 in 9 games this year. The guy is due to have like 6-7 games in a row where he doesnt commit an error at this point.

Agree. You got 2 downvotes and I guarantee you they came from Pawl boys like Russian or Poncho

Or shite them all clockwise one spot. Thompson to 2B, Doughty to 3B and Merrifield to SS.

Doughty got really good at 3B last year. A little less at 2B this year.
Oh, puhleeze - nobody in BR shits clockwise! Pffffttt.
