It’s just not Thompson….it’s also Merrifield and Doighty too.

I would say Doughty really just had a very bad game (LT) than consistently bad defense.

Merrifield is weird to me, guy was defensive player of the year in JUCO and doesnt seem comfortable at 3B. I wonder why we juts dont put him at 2B where he won defensive player of the year and leave Doughty at 3 B where he was comfortable last year.

Doughty made a good turn yesterday. His body position was much better.

I agree. I'm not sure if his pre pitch positioning was too far from the bag or what at La Tech but it seemed his momentum taking him across the bag was throwing him off. Last night he got there on time and was able to have his feet set in a better position to throw. I'm thinking that had to be something that was adjusted for him to pinch the middle a little more after La Tech.

Was merrifield 2B or SS? Broadcast has said SS a few times.

You couldn't justify replacing Thompson with Cranford. Cranford's defense isn't elite, and you certainly wouldn't want him in the batting order with Milazzo.

Doughty would be next up at SS, opening up 2B, 3B, or RF...depending on how you moved everybody around. I just don't think Doughty would be good enough at SS to justify it, and he's just starting to get comfortable at 2B. Leave him alone. On the other hand, that move would put another good bat in the lineup that will otherwise only get spot time.

Merrifield hasn't played alot of SS recently. He's mainly been a 2B, and just starting to get comfortable at 3B. Leave him alone, too.

Bianco at SS is the interesting option at SS for me.

I hope Thompson settles down, though.

Very little to do with positioning. His bag approach and transfer were just poor. Even if you get there late, no reason to throw across your body like he was doing.

Thompson was pretty good in the field last season. But he had horrible time in the field in the regional and it’s kind of snowballed from there.

I cant find season long stats on starts for him there but I just clicked on every box score LSU-E had in the World Series last year and he was 2B in every single one of them

He was throwing across his body because of bad body position.

Yes. You have to get used to that angle from throws coming from 3B and SS towards the 5-6 hole.

Everyone gets what the other guy was saying but this doesn’t feel like that situations

Neither of our SS are fielding well, and this isn’t a situation we’re we are sacrificing defense for offense. Thompson is supposed to be better than this.

We should have held onto Hal Hughes.

Thompsons glove is suspect but he has great tools. Cannon arm and range. We don't have many options. He will just get reps and get better.

I think he's saying that you guys are both correct and your logic makes sense but it's more of an overall philosophy thing as opposed to the direct question he posed. The Manager's preference is irrelevant when both Managers start the same guy at the same position. His performance has gotten worse. Manager preference doesn't explain that in the slightest bit even though the guy was right. You just got caught in a crossfire of internet frustration.

Jay was high on Thompson before the season, calling him a future big leaguer. Let's just hope this is a blip. It's hard to do that after seeing him struggle a bit to end last season, my mind makes me want to think he's just a fungo all star and he gets tight when the lights come on. But, I'm gonna hold out.

1. Cranford - his bat isn't great but he has proven to be solid defensively. 2. Doughty - played there in scrimmages but isn't really an upgrade defensively. It would open a spot for someone like Bianco or Safford at 2nd base. Not sure this would be a long term solution. 3. Bianco - when healthy, he could be a servicable SS. He is streaky offensively but has a lot of pop in his bat.

I don’t think it’s time to replace Thompson, but if that time comes maybe one of the freshmen, Leto or Simon, could take over.

Merrfield played mainly 2B, but 3B & 1B were his other positions at juco.

Prob a HS SS but I’m not sure where that comes from otherwise

Just assumed he was further from the bag and was having to run faster to get to the bag. Figured it was his momentum making him cross the bag and throw across his body.

The play last night it looked like he was at the bag waiting on the toss to make the turn instead of still getting to the bag when receiving the throw.

Leto isn't a SS at this level and Simon is a redshirt. Neither of those options is in play this season.

Simon has been hurt & Leto has taken reps at 1B & OF

Cranford
Doughty
Holt
Merrifield

Are the guys who have taken reps at SS
