This team relies too much on the longball

Reflecting on last night. Felt like early to mid season, we did a nice job of moving runners around, especially with 2 outs. Not sure if our inability to start a basehit rally has to do with Crews and Dugas tailing off or seeing better pitching. Thompson also had a tear where he had some clutch 2 out RBIs which he hasn’t been producing regularly.

I know pitching is this team’s real problem but if we want to win anything, the bats will have to do it.

Edit: happy to swallow this comment. Geaux Tigers

Do you think this team is just going to stop hitting home runs? They have all year against all levels of pitch quality.

The problem is pitching.

Crews in particular could have changed the fate of at least 2 of the recent losses if he was hitting like his usual self. If you just think about it, the outlook from LSU fans would be totally different if not for 2/3 close SEC losses & they win the 3rd game vs USCe (Cock-Pussies)

The bats are definitely what they rely on to win but they do need solid pitching. When they have struggled of late, it has been pitching that has been the primary downfall, though some timely hitting may have won several of those games. Though I will say that the occasional out lost to poor defense and more than occasional lack of strike calls by these umps have also impacted games.

It is interesting that earlier in the season LSU had several games where they scored more runs than they did last night with few home runs, just timely hitting. They need to stop leaving so many runners on base and particularly in scoring position.

Crews has never been a home run or bust kind of hitter. His just hit into some unfortunate double plays recently.

Agree. Other than occasional bunts we don’t even attempt to manufacture runs. Its power or bust

This team is 2nd in the country and 1st in SEC play in OBP. They don’t just hit HRs. Last night wasn’t how they’ve been playing all year. They are scuffling a bit at the moment to put together rallies, so it’s good they can fall back on power in games like last night to compensate. That’s a good thing, not a bad thing.

Omaha bigger park and not friendly to home runs. Long outs.

They aren’t seeing better pitching than what they say earlier in the year.
Dugas hasn’t quite been the same since he hit the ground hard against Kentucky.
Crews, well I don’t know what the deal is but signs are showing that he’s coming out of whatever funk he was in.

This team doesn't "rely" on the longball. They rely on their approach which often leads to hits, walks, HBP, and of course HRs. Terrible take.

Going into yesterdays game LSU led the SEC in hits & hit by pitch, 2nd in SEC for doubles, 3rd in walks
They know how to find their way on base

I don’t expect us to stop hitting home runs or even want that. But we will have to produce runs in other ways if we want to be good teams IMO especially if we make it to the big ball park in Omaha.

I said it in the OP and I’ll say it again, the Achilles’ heel of this team is clearly pitching, so with that said, our team is going to have to score a shite load of runs. I’m not saying it’s fair to our offense, just the truth.

Thinking specific to last nights game. The extra inning bombs from Pearson and Thompson are out in Omaha and that was the difference in the game. My point, made a little differently, is that if we can stop stranding as many base runners as we are right now, we’re gonna be really hard to beat.

Omaha doesn't play nearly as big as it did when it first opened. The balls have changed.

Home run totals during the first four years of the CWS in TD Ameritrade Park were 9, 10, 3, and 3.

In 2015, 15 homers were hit.

In 2019 (22), 2021 (28), and 2022 (28).
