This is a dumb take. It’s rooted in logic I suppose but this game absolutely matters. If LSU wins they are in the drivers seat of the entire conference and vice versa.

if alabama were to lose to LSU, it would obviously mean they were overrated and not that good. that's the talking point this year.

Bama will have the worst schedule of any one loss team. They cannot afford to lose this game and back their way into the playoff.

If they then lost several others games...like AU and Miami have since LSU beat them, sure.

Was that the point you were trying to make?

Notre Dame stay undefeated,

An undefeated ND is the ultimate cog in the wheel of a 1 loss, non SEC champ Bama team.

It would be so glorious to see, that I would certainly be rooting like hell for ND for the rest of the year.

let's say ND wins out and so does Clemson.

LSU beats Alabama 11/3 and GA/UF in the SECCG.

who gets in from the following, to join LSU, Clemson and ND:

1-loss Big 10 champ Michigan (loss to ND)
1-loss Big 12 champ OU (loss to UT)
1-loss Pac 12 champ Wazzu (loss to USC)
1-loss Alabama (loss to LSU) and not a conference champ

Bama's schedule isn't that favorable for them if they lose to LSU. 2 ranked teams on the schedule at the time they played. 1 of those ranked teams was #22 at the time, the other a loss (again if LSU wins). Maybe 3 ranked teams if Mississippi State or Auburn managed to sneak into the top 25 (unlikely) before they play.

Michigan and Ohio State will have a much better strength of schedule with 1 loss than Bama will have. It'd be a travesty to see a team with a better strength of schedule/record get overlooked for Bama, just because it's Bama.

To me it seems Clemson (if they stay unbeaten), Notre Dame are given. The other two spots are likely to be winner of Michigan/Ohio State and SEC champion.

I disagree. Thats risking an awful lot on the chances of making cfp and not winning the west.

Also what if Bama would take a purdue osu type beat down by 4 td’s? Then the talk would be, oh well bama hadn’t played anyone yet so there you go.

It all depends on the shake out of a half dozen conference championships and Notre Dame but I agree alabama AGAIN might not have to win the conference championship to play for, or win, the national championship.

but as far as Alabama and the playoff are concerned, this game is utterly meaningless. They would be better off losing, missing out on the SEC title game, and getting almost six full weeks to prepare for the first playoff game.

I know everyone is saying this based on last year but last year they had 1 of the 4 best records in P5. Ohio State won the B1G with 2 losses and USC won PAC 12 with 3. That scenario won’t necessarily repeat.

Notre Dame going undefeated is the biggest obstacle, an undefeated ND gets in, as does the SEC Champ. That’s 2 spots right there.

The other 2!spots you could have an undefeated Clemson or if they stumble a 1 loss B1G champ. Now if it’s Ohio St the “quality of loss” standard that Bama likes when it suits them would be in play but if it’s Michigan that’s not so, especially if ND is undefeated. And in the Big XII you could have either a 1 loss Texas or OU. Now Texas has a bad loss but maybe would have enough quality to wins to cancel it out our OU who could avenge their only loss

A 1 loss SEC team would need the following to get in

1. Notre Dame Loss
2. 2 or more 2 loss conference champions.

The committee would rather a 1 loss team to a 2 loss conference champion(2016 OSU, 2017 Alabama) , but would rather a 1 loss conference champion over a team that didn’t win its conference (2014 OSU over TCU who was technically “co-champion” with Baylor but lost head to head)

Point being there's a realistic chance a 1 loss Alabama gets left out.

Not a chance in hell, if that happened they will pump the “but their one loss was to LSU” doesn’t matter their entire schedule was garbage.

Who should have gotten in over Alabama last year?

2 loss Ohio State or 2 loss USC?

If LSU wins out, the only way Bama gets left out is if Michigan and/or OU keep winning big. They aren’t going to put OSU in after getting throttled by Purdue.

That depends on what else happens. If Michigan, Notre Dame and Clemson win out you will have 2 undefeated teams and Michigan will be Conference Champs with only a loss to Notre Dame and a harder schedule. Now way Alabama gets in in that scenario if they don’t make the SECCG

Let's not forget that two of Alabama's recent national championships were won when they didn't even win their division. Alabama will be in the final four if they lose out the rest of the way.

Nope

If Michigan runs the table they're in though

The whole "quality of loss" thing would be the discussion to help Bama

they would not be better off losing. that is asinine. If they win out and lose the SEC championship, they're still in the playoff. the only way they don't make the playoff is if they lose to us, we lose to A&M, and then they lose the SEC championship making them 11-2. this and the SEC champ are the only two losable games on their schedule in my opinion

What if Texas wins out?

12 game win streak.

Conference champs

Win over OU.

Only loss on the road to an emotional maryland
