I just posted this on the SR, and please let me know if you disagree, but as far as Alabama and the playoff are concerned, this game is utterly meaningless. They would be better off losing, missing out on the SEC title game, and getting almost six full weeks to prepare for the first playoff game.

I'm not saying this is a good thing. It's very bad for college football, but explain to me why this isn't true.

But LSU is also playing, so no, it’s not meaningless.

Not if they also lose to The Citadel.

If LSU didn't frick up and lose to Florida maybe.

But LSU is playing in the game, too. And needs to win to have any shot.

Undefeated ND
Undefeated Clemson
1 Loss non Alabama SEC Champ
1 Loss Ohio State or Michigan

Alabama gets left out

I'm not sure your reasoning here. If we do beat Alabama, it's not a sure thing that they run the table the rest of the way. If they would slip up again it would be over for them.

Yep - it rewards losing and there is a precedent for it. In every other sport I can think about, there is a value given to winning your key in-conference or in-division games and it can sometimes result in a team that looks to be stronger missing out on the postseason.

Creating the playoff basically guarantees a team like Bama that can always "pass the eye test", no matter how weak their schedule, a spot in the playoffs.

The truth is that for LSU to win a NC they have to beat BAMA twice

I get what you’re saying but it’s not a given for Alabama unless they get some help from other teams.

Hmmm idk

Idk if a 1 loss Bama bumps a 1 loss Texas/Oklahoma and a 1 loss Michigan/Ohio State.

Alabama bumped some conference champions last year but tOSU and USC both had 2 loses.

If Clemson and Notre Dame stay undefeated, a different team won’t the SEC and 1 out of Texas/Oklahoma/Ohio State/Michigan win out, I dont See how you put Alabama in there.

That doesn't matter. Point being there's a realistic chance a 1 loss Alabama gets left out.

I don't really care about the cfp. I care about winning each individual game, and I absolutely care about taking down Bamas smug asses in our house.

I care about winning the west and the SEC championship despite the league's blatant favoritism.

Postseason in college football has always been more of a fun dog and pony show than anything else. Games like UGA for us and UF for them, and what's coming next weekend, are what make the sport great.

You can't assume the future in CFB. Right now it's meaningful for both teams.

If Bama has one loss to the #4ranked LSU where would they fall? Their quality of loss (to a 4) is higher than LSU single loss ((to UF #11ish ). Bama would still be in top 4 and will be well rested for the CFP.

Do not be surprised if a 1 loss Bama is in the playoffs over a 1 loss Ohio State team in this scenario.

Agreed...it's meaningless for them assuming they win out. In fact, it almost assuredly benefits them to not have to play the SEC Championship game.

For LSU, everything rides on this game's outcome.

I don't see it. If they can choose between a one-loss Ohio State that lost by 30 to Purdue or a one-loss Alabama that lost on the road at LSU, I'm pretty sure they're going Bama.
