Does anyone else think it was bizarre that he got permabenched so quickly while Thompson/Jobert/McManus got such long leashes?

Does CJJ have a daughter in her 20s? Because it reminded me of the Tyler Moore treatment.

Thompson and Jobert started hot and produced all season.

McManus was competing with Travinski and splitting time until he took the role over.

Plus, all of these guys have actual ability outside of being an above average pinch runner

Thompson was never pulled while averaging an error a game.

I wanted to see Safford get at least a midweek at short. He choked as a freshman in the postseason trying to throw ICBMs to first, but hardly got a shot this year while JT was allowed to flounder.

No

Safford might be the most unqualified player I’ve ever seen at LSU. He might start at LSUE.

All-time hits leader wasn’t a big guy either.

Safford was never going to play SS at LSU. He never took advantage of any opportunity given last year or this year. He was a practice time player who put up good stats during fall and spring scrimmages, but couldn't step it up when given game time reps. That simple. Some of you don't do a good job at seeing the player as a whole instead of just concentrating on defense. No player on the roster last year gave you enough value to take Thompson out. You had to live with his errors because he hit the ball much better than the rest. Toward the end of the season his bat and glove both came along and Thompson was fine.

Shame on CPM. Seriously this is a great kid from a great family. This should not have happened. It was something CPM did for great kids like this once every couple of years. And it always ended bad. I wish Will all the best.

Typical fricking Paul Mainieri recruiting. Just like Orgeron with the Bordelon kid.

I hope you realize that every team in baseball has a couple kids like that on their roster. It’s not just LSU. Good luck Will

I just mentioned Mainieri really liked to recruit some small kids.

I will echo these thoughts. I’ve known Will his entire life. Used to pitch to him when he was 3 years old.

Great kid, didn’t work out for him. Wish him the best.

And before the obligatory replies of “Dad” or “Uncle”, I am neither. Family friend who has known the Safford’s and Landry’s for longer than I care to remember.

Safford hit the bench so quickly because he was completely overmatched at the plate. His freshmen year he went 3 for 35 dude. He did well in scrimmages leading up to this season so Jay gave him a shot but it was clear very early on he was very overmatched once again.

Who would play SS instead of Thompson? Cranford who was awful at the plate? Trade a guy hitting near .300 with pop for a guy who might hit .200 with a sub .300 slugging pct on a good season? By the end of the season Thompson was in a pretty good groove defensively with just 1 error his last 11 games and 2 errors his last 16 games.

With Milazzo out who did you expect to catch between McManus and Travinski? They gave both shots and ultimately McManus was more consistent at the plate, neither could play a lick of defense consistently.

Jobert went through extremely hot and extremely cold spells. Again though who really would have replaced him and done much better? Beloso was out for the season. Pearson mad his way in the lineup through the outfield. Stevenson played in the outfield but his bat was significantly worse than Jobert's. I mean maybe Luke Leto since we didnt really get to see him? who knows.

Not everyone in a lineup is going to hit .300+ with pop. Doesnt happen for any team. I just dont know who you think would replace all these guys with the injuries at these spots or at SS when we just had no real option outside of Thompson consistently. I think the only argument there is maybe Doughty play SS and Thompson 2B but not sure that really improves anything defensively.

Not really anymore than other teams. And it was much more in the 2013-2017 tiemframe. The last 2-3 years he recruited lots of bigger guys

The more recent ones definitely didn't make it well here. Wes Toups, Will Safford and Brennan Holt.

They didnt, but thatll happen. Those types of guys are usually good for depth. Who know, holt or safford may do well elsewhere

This is a little much. I think he will turn up at a smaller school & play well.

Would Safford have hit a walk-off dinger against OU? End of discussion.

He got a shot against Vandy and their 1-2 pitchers Rocker and Leitner. No one wearing purple and gold hit those guys.
And the misthrows he made came after he laid out and got to balls that our other 2B men wouldn't have reached IMO.
I don't understand how he wasnt given a reasonable shot this year to play 3B when we actually had Merrifield there for several games, and he struggled tremendously.
Wouldn't have hurt to give Safford a legit shot for 3-4 games. Couldn't have been worse than we were early in season.
