I like that we can go and find all the late bloomers in baseball.

they could have formulated sensible regulations that an athlete could receive compensation for doing autograph signings, apparel sales, and personal appearance.

I am watching Brandon Harris and Miles Brennan at QB. The portal is created and I get to watch Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels. And now Sam Leavitt.
What was the question again????
Throw in Paul Skenes, Tommy White, Angel Reese who won natty’s.
Portal good
Pre portal bad
Me like portal

The portal isn't killing the sports. It's the system being exposed, that's killing the sports. The NCAA governs poorly, coaches being poached, conferences being whores to TV deals, etc. The transfer portal may be a symptom, but it's not the diagnosable sickness.

Sensible - athletes are absolutely worth the 6 figure, and some cases 7 figure deals that they are getting. Place a minimum 10k and max 1M on the guys and keep it moving.
You can't tell me that an entity who showcases talent, and earns xxxMillions, can't afford to hash out such a small portion of that to the talent. Don't get me started on the businesses that also get to get paid from college athletics that aren't directly tied into the school budgets.

If we can be honest, it's the new generation of kids (and parents). No patience, self-centered, attention-seeking, fine with bending or breaking the rules if it benefits them. Want instant gratification.

I want to push back on that Pirate. Nothing that is happening that's any different from when we were kids. It's just dressed differently.
And again, they are just a byproduct of the system - 7on7 tournaments that highlight personalities, being televised. Multiple recruiting sites jockeying for best in class rating services, podcasters wanting to moonlight as credible new sources always looking for the scoop. Maybe there are some bad actors out there, but I'm sure the overwhelming majority of people are trying to do this thing correctly with the cards they've been dealt.
We talk from a place of not knowing fully what happens during recruiting...the recruiting "game" has caused a lot of what we dislike with kids selecting schools...but we rarely talk about how many of these schools don't allow kids to commit, schools rescind offers, schools lose their coaches two days before work outs, etc.

I can't speak for your family, but my father wouldn't have enabled or pushed me to transfer just because I wasn't getting playing time or big money immediately.
There used to be such a thing as building character. I think we can see from the world at large, that's gone bye-bye. Both parents and kids choose the path of least resistance and are worse humans for it.

Transfer portal killing soul of College Athletics, correct.
And, Pipped-in music is killing the Soul of Death Valley….

Pirate: Fair.
But there in lies the issue, if you are operating at the capacity that you were taught, and i'm operating at the capacity that I was taught...we both aren't wrong in our approach. It's just different than the other one. Character for you is honoring your commitment, when character for me would be pushing for the contract to be honored from the other side in the way that was sold to me when coach sat in my house and said it would be. Nothing wrong with either view point.

Money is killing college sports.
Everybody was making bank, but the players who were stuck at a school with only a one year scholarship.

How much is out of state tuition and room & board per year at LSU these days? Then as an athlete you get first choice before anyone else on class choices with certain professors and timeslots. Top notch nutrition free of cost.
All that alone has to equal $100k/year or more in value. From there, yes, athletes should be allowed to do commercials or sign autographs for additional money.
But that's not what this whole "Name, Image, Likeness" thing has become. It is nothing like what was sold as the "poor college kid who can't afford to eat on the weekends".

I suspect it also lets certain players know that they are not as good as they think they are...how many players enter the portal and do not end up finding another school. Presumably their career is now over. I wonder how many of the portal entrees from LSU will find this out the hard way.
