quote:Donahue retired from coaching at LSU. 4 years later he re-emerged as an assistant at Spring Hill. As far as Bible, leaving aside the absurdity of who “left” whom in the era before coaches had contracts and were paid beyond what they raised, he only coached 3 games - not even an entire season.

if that isn't enough Bulletin Board material to beat the hell out of Army than I don't know what is.

After that it was quite frustrating. Coach Mac's record against elite opponents, particularly Alabama, was subpar. And his record his last six seasons in Baton Rouge was as follows: 5-5-1, 4-7, 6-4-1, 8-4, 8-4, 7-5. Les Miles' fans would have been horrified at that level of mediocreness.
Yeah, Mac would not have made it past 1975 in today's climate. From 1973-79 we only beat one team that finished the season ranked in either poll.
He was the first coach of my memory which begins in 1973 Re: LSU football. I liked Mac, but my Dad could not stand him.
I do see some similarities to Miles in that he was not the best public speaker and he was mostly conservative offensively. And he struggled against Bama.
But Miles was a better recruiter. Early in Macs tenure Gov. John McKiethen and the then AD Jim Corbett did a lot of recruiting for LSU - different era back then. When they were out of the picture recruiting began to suffer and so did the product on the field.

After 1962, when was Charlie Mac's product ever worth a d*m?
The very next year LSU lost a home game vs Ole Miss 37-3. Not competitive. Then in the Cotton Bowl year of 1965 LSU lost 23-0 to Ole Miss and 31-7 to Bama. The next year LSU lost 28-7 to Florida, 17-0 to Ole Miss and 21-0 to Alabama, all in a row. And they lost star QB Trey Prather to the cruel Vietnam War, thanks to Coach Charlie Mac.
The gospel truth is "Cholly Mac" sucked as a coach. I don't know how this board came to idolize the man.

Cholly Mac = Les Miles
Lots of potential, but wasted talent and was Bama’s little brother

Bruh, you're really going to blame the guy for Vietnam?

Even less than Les. No national championships. One SEC championship.

revisionist history, or just ignorance

He was Les Miles coaching, without the philandering.

Yes. I'm blaming McClendon for Trey Prather and Vietnam. Trey wanted desperately to play and start for the Tigers, and he could have been a great one like Bradshaw or Joe Ferguson or Bert Jones later for the Tigers.
But "Cholly Mac" had other plans, and it was widely reported at the time that starting QB Freddie Haynes was Mac's nephew and the coach was partial to him because of his relationship, even though he didn't have near the talent of Prather, who saw only limited work in mop-up duty in 1966. Prather, seeing no future as an LSU QB, his lifelong dream, joined the Marine Corps where he was deployed to Nam. He stepped on a land mine on New Year's Day 1968, and died of his injuries on Jan. 10 of that year.
Reading Trey Prather's biography makes me cry; reading statements of praise for "Cholly Mac" just makes me angry. The man was a rotten coach, far worse than Oeaux.

first of all, Trey Prather enlisted in the Marine Corps, secondly, you’ve got some issues baw

Yea, I knew he was in the Marine Corps. I said "Army" since we're focused on Army this weekend, and thought no one would catch the mistake. I'm really surprised anyone remembered Trey Prather!
What "issues" do I have? Reporting things like McClendon's inability to coach good football? The man was more stubborn than Miles and the results on the field just got worse as the years went by, save his last season (after he was officially fired) whereby his team played well against USC, Alabama and Florida State-- three of the best teams in America that year. But, in typical "Cholly Mac" fashion, he lost all three! Even Hallman would have won at least one of those games.

I think you're wrong about Mac for several reasons but I have to get ready to go to work for a few hours, maybe we can discuss it later

Trey was big news in our town, in hs, at LSU, and unfortunately when he was killed, we've never forgotten

Yea I went to the same HS as Trey, and he was classmates with my sisters. I was in high school a couple years later when Joe Ferguson won a state championship
