Underwhelming

We had what most consider a top freshman class and possible the top portal class. That is not reactionary.
Having to go to the portal for as much as we did is not exactly a great sign of building a program. We picked up a lot of key pieces that if we didn't, would be in serious trouble.

It’s not BK’s fault Underwood took more money and stayed home.
To that point, if we keep Underwood we don't spend on a lot of those transfer pieces. So where would this defense be?

Perkins was the best player on defense right away but it took 4-5 weeks before he was really on the field constantly
Same with Weeks if you recall.

IF we don't make the CFP and he manages to hang on as HC, he'll be REACTIVE again and do a 2023 REVERSAL by firing the entire Offensive Staff.
That will buy him some more time. (Again)
Of course, my hopes (And many others) is that he "See's the Light" and voluntarily Resigns/Retires after the season with a nice "Settlement" to GTFO a la Orgeron.
Then, here we go again after the season!
All in for Jon Gruden if nobody picks him up before then, which is doubtful because a few SEC teams will have a vacancy and he's already stated that he wants to coach again and IN THE SEC!

I agree with the theme you are espousing.

Better word...Regression

BK is not a bad coach, you don’t win 217 games and be a bad coach. His problem here is his hires especially House and Sloan. As OCs. Unfortunately for him he is not hands on enough on Offense to make up for Sloan incompetence.

There is a coach that misuse the quarterback and force him to follow schemes he is not sure of and there is a head coach that becomes irrational and lashes out : “Those who criticize me don’t know anything about football. All they do is sit on the sidelines and chatter. A few losses cannot define an entire season.”
Any head coach that is paid millions must never accept a few losses every year.

BK may be the type to put MVB in, in a horrible situation. Then after say see I knew what I was doing all along.

This transfer portal era is absolutely brutal. You need a younger energetic coach to handle this. These old timers like Kelly cannot keep up. It’s too much for him. He was a better coach in a different era. His time has passed

There is a lot to criticize BK about but recruiting and roster building are not one of them.
I mean it’s his fourth year here and we have no offensive line or running game. That’s a massive problem. Also even if it’s fine now, he was still reactive, which proves the OP’s point. He went from saying, “we are going to build through high school recruiting” and “we aren’t in the business of buying players” to begging for money so he could go buy 18 transfers. That was reactive.
