Give it to a freshman kicker next year and be done with it.

Also, nobody cares what the fans think. The players still want to wear it.

But for God’s sake don’t let them pick the uniforms they wear. The alternates are ruining the brand /s

Up/downvote ratio is pretty strong actually. Looks like more people agree than disagree, including this guy.

Isn’t he one of the best young corners in the NFL right now?

You’re wrong about both of these, they are both great pros.

And wrong about Chark. Just because he didn’t have a QB who could get him the ball at an elite level doesn’t mean he wasn’t great.

Yeah. If Perkins wouldn't have been wearing #7 on his jersey he would have 5 sacks, 12 tfls, 3 forced fumbles, 1 int, and his ACL would be connected. Clearly the number contributed heavily to all of this.

Do some of you even think before you post?

DJ Chark - decent year, nothing special
Nearly doubled his production from the year before and had an all time punt return TD in Tiger Stadium

Jonathan Giles - absolutely awful, should have killed the tradition right there
Ed Orgeron is a moron.

Grant Delpit - lingering injury all year - never returned to dominance even in the league - we haven’t had a dominant safety since
Won the thorpe award and has been a very good NFL safety.

2020:
Ja’marr Chase - opted out that year - seemingly dodged a bullet - number 7 could have left a mark on his soul but he’s been dominant in the league

Derek Stingley - played in 6 games - was hurt most of year - still hasn’t returned to dominance in the league
Was a stud, got hurt, now a top 5-10 CB in the NFL

2022:
Kayshon Boutte - I had to look up his name he was such a non factor his final two years here - starting to see a major trend with guys with dominant freshman seasons then fading into irrelevance - played the whole season after a gnarly injury the previous year - remains a shell of his former self
Boutte led the country in receiving TD through 5 games before making an incredible catch that basically ruined his career. Saying he was a "non factor" in '21 is factually incorrect and makes you look like a moron

2023:
Will Campbell - couldn’t physically wear number 7 - turned out good for him
All American

2024:
Harold Perkins - we all know this story - can be lumped in with Stingley and Boutte - out for year - will get drafted - will probably never return to dominance
Injured.

You are stupid. 7 is not for the fans, it's for the players.

Only reason they should do it is if the players like it but otherwise I agree. It needs to be retired. It’s a silly tradition and when you constantly find yourself disappointed in #7 every year, it loses its value.

#7 started with the DBs and that’s where it should stay. It only became a jinx when we took it out of the secondary and started using it at other positions.

I think it should be given to a sophmore. There is allot of factors with a third year player with a high draft grade that accross the nation to have a drop in performance to their junior years.

There is so much pressure on these players to "not get hurt" and protect their high draft status. Devin White is one of the few players we have had with a high draft grade going in to his third year that has gotten better. The list of number 7's listed could apply to numerous major programs with their start sophmore players.

Not disagreeing overall, but your assessment of Stingley is off base. He's top 3 CB in the NFL.

quote:

Derek Stingley Jr. has reached contender status after flourishing as the Houston Texans' No. 1 corner in 2023. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder finished his second season with 39 tackles, 13 passes defensed and five interceptions, despite missing six games due to a hamstring injury. Fast-forward to this preseason, and the Texans' CB1 not only looks like a potential All-Pro, but I believe he could supplant Gardner as the NFL's top corner by season's end.

Ok. I put my foot in my mouth with Delpit and Stingley about their pro careers, but the real point is it’s been a bad tradition for almost a decade and as a fan it’s hard to watch. It started off so promising with three legendary players, only to see it be an almost certain mark of disappointment. Sure, I guess it’s a player thing but it doesn’t seem like it’s doing them any favors. Sometimes, a coach should step in and say this isn’t serving LSU Football (which is a brand that is inextricable from the fans that watch it) and we should just nix it for now. As a player, I’d feel like shite if the purported best player on the team was constantly hurt or underperforming. Would seem to be harmful to morale.

Also, whoever said Will Campbell was an All-American last year is wrong about that.
