His oldest granddaughter was married early this past Saturday in Nashville, and he was at the Sunday championship game. One of the Tiger's number one fans...him hollering at the tv was my first memory of LSU baseball for real...I had to see what the fuss was all about. Now I'm the age he was in 93...

Holy shite. Yes he did! I can't find the box score to see if he pitched in that game.
That's wild!

Of course, he was Oregon State's pitching coach when Arkansas had another Arkansas moment in 2018. It was his staff shutting them out in Game 3 that brought them their 3rd title!

Yep, that happens to the best of us.
My moment like that was listening to LSU v USC football in 1979 with my older brother, who was like 17, and I was 9 at the time. John Ferguson was still the play by play announcer. I mean, I had sort of followed it before that, but I was too young to really get it. The bug got to me after that one. Both of us just paced around our tiny house round and round for three plus hours. It was gut wrenching but exhilarating at the same time.

Been a national seed all 8 seasons. Definitely need to set ourselves up Feb-May to have the road to Omaha go through the Box. Love Jay’s outlook calling the regular season a 56-game playoff

2017 gets lost in all of this, but LSU was down 3-4 to FSU in the 8th in game 1 of the CWS.
Then got crushed by Oregon State and had to come from the losers' bracket to beat a team that only lost 4 games all season twice. Unfortunately, couldn't win that first game vs Florida, because I do think we win game 3 with Lange starting.

Yes, I've always said that Florida needed LSU to win their first and still only baseball title. If we don't get rid of Oregon State for them (especially the extra game), they probably don't win that year. So glad we could pay them back within a six year period (of course, we killed them twice in 1991 on our way to our first title). And again beat them twice in 1996 to win that one.

Tigers winning aside, this was the best baseball game at any level I have ever watched. The pitching, Tre Morgan’s scoop and save, and Tommy Tanks (as you mentioned).

10/10 post, Lord's work on this one

This only focused on title runs. We also had:
1. 1989 College Station regional - coming from the loser's bracket to beat 56-5 Texas A&M twice on Sunday to get to Omaha. Down 4-3 in the top of the 8th of the final game after whooping them in the first game, we score one to tie in the 8th and won it in the 11th with Big Ben closing it out.
2. 2017 Omaha - beating 56-4 Oregon State twice in the semifinal games, breaking a 23 game winning streak
3. 2008 BR Super Regional - second to last game at the Box v. UC Irvine - Down 7-2 in the top of the 8th, score two in the 8th and FIVE in the 9th to go up 9-7 and win with that score. Live to play just one more at the old Box, Beat Irvine to move on to Omaha in Game 3.
4. 1999 BR Regional - Down 10-9 in the bottom of the eighth in an elimination game to East Carolina after they had already beaten us once, we score 3 in the bottom of the eighth to win 12-10. Go on to beat them once more to then go get killed by Bama in the first Super Regional ever.
5. 1998 BR Regional - Down 11-9 to Augie's Fullerton team in the regional in an elimination for us, we score 4 in the bottom of the 8th to go on to win 13-11 and give ourselves a fighting chance for a three-peat.
6. 1986 BR Regional - We had to beat Tulane to get to our first trip to Omaha. We were down 6-4 going to the top of the 8th. We scored 2 in the 8th and one in the 9th and closed them out in the bottom of the 9th to win 7-6, avoid an elimination game and make our FIRST of 20 (and counting) trips to Omaha.

Great post. I remember listening to the 1997 Long Beach game on radio late on a Saturday night. Very tense thinking that team had a good shot to win it all and realizing it was close to being over. I memory serves, Skip got run and went off on the umpire late in the game. Hat turned backwards in his face.

Missed DP wasn’t JUST by the SEC POY, but from the GOLDEN SPIKES WINNER lol

Ha that's right. But that's Arkansas. The guy was practically perfect at SS all season, and then he does that.

As I watched that game at the box I couldn't believe what was happening. How many doubles did they hit in a row in one inning. 5? The whole thing was surreal.
There was definitely magic at the old box. And some.of it has carried over luckily.

Another fun factoid: LSU's first tournament appearance was at the Starkville Regional in 1975. We beat Murray State (making their first trip to Omaha this year) in our first playoff game ever, then lost to FSU. We then got booted by Miami who was one year from hiring the one and only Skip Bertman.
Also, Skip had a very inauspicious start to his playoff career at LSU. In 1985, he made his first trip as head coach at LSU in the playoffs going to the Austin regional. We got killed by Lamar and Houston back to back and didn't even get a chance to whiff mighty Texas. BTW - Skip's old team won it all that year (Miami) beating none other than the might Horns in the title game.

UT hits 3 solo HRs in the bottom of the 4th, to grab a 6-4 lead going into the LSU half of the 9th inning.
Texas hit 6 homers and lost... wonder how many times that has happened in CWS history

Great post. Goes to show that, no matter the era or talent level, it takes some magic to win out.
People love to mock it, but that's baseball...
Even 2023 is the most talented team of all time, and there are 10 plays that if they go differently, we don't win the title.
Need to be good, then need to get lucky

I was at that entire 97 regional and it’s still all a blur. Getting home in the early morning hours just to turn around and do it all again. Great times!
