Two most important guys for that season weren’t even on the team

The boosters had Jon Gruden’s number on speed dial and Gruden was ready for the call too.

The lighting delay against Auburn. I had to work and left just in time from New Orleans to make it midway through the first quarter. Wife had beer and a change of clothes for me in the car.

My bad this was the 2003 auburn game I’m pretty sure.

I was a student as well. Just all around better times. 2007 was one of if not my favorite years of life. Although I have never been more pissed off in a sports environment than I was after that Arkansas 3-OT loss.

Some other non-mainline thoughts on '07:
- The only NC Les ever won was done with an aggressive offense. But after '08, he ditched it and never relented.

Miles MO went from new money to old money with the quickness.

Tiger fans deserve that shite because pushing his buttons with all the riverboat gambler and Hat shite and Miles was like, "I aint letting that be my legacy"

Yep. 2006-2011 I’d say. Once the mulligan game and Saban Dynasty began, the downfall started

kickoff classic game. UNC TE drops game winning TD as time expired.

Up and down game. UNC QB throws 99 yard td pass. Later LSU trying to run out the cllock and RB fumbles. UNC drives to shawdow of the goal line as time expires.

2010 was a fascinating season. That team way over performed to get to 10 wins. Even the two loses were pretty close. The Auburn losss was only by 7. If they somehow win that game lsu could have won the sec and a chance at playing for the national championship.

But you’re right it could have gone way the other way with the Tennessee, UNC Florida crazy wins. But also West Virginia should have been a loss. Get this. Jordan Jefferson went 10 for 22 for 75 yards and 2 INT and still somehow won.

But 2010 year saved miles job and carried the momentum into 2011.

I remember Lafell dropping a wide open opportunity against Auburn. That was peak “drops”. It was great to see him turn things around mid season and end on a high note.

2007 was great but nothing comes close to the buildup and the entire experience of the 2003 Georgia game.

That was a special moment in Tiger Stadium. Before, during and after the game.

That's a memory formed with the benefit of hindsight of how that season ultimately turned out. And I say that as someone who tailgated/camped out the night before and was in the crowd that day. 2007 vs Florida had as big of a build up. 2008 vs. Alabama was even bigger.

The 2003 Georgia game was a great game and moment in LSU history. But at the time LSU was not in the National Championship hunt. Nor was that thought even conceivable by the fans. What made the buildup "big" were two "first" outside of the actual game: (1) it was the first time College Game Day (when that was still a big deal) had been to LSU since the 1997 Florida game, and (2) it was the first time LSU was playing THE big game on CBS at the 2:30 spot. (Yes, LSU played Alabama at 2:30 in 2000...but that was a bad Alabama team. They were 3-5 entering the game). More than anything, LSU fans love to reminisce about that game because its the one where they can pat themselves on the back for "not giving up" after the UGA 90+ TD.

Great game. Doesn't hold a candle to the 2007 season.

Unlike in 2003, LSU entered the season as one of the favorites to win the National Championship. The home schedule got started with the first home top 10 non-conf. matchup since LSU played Ohio St in 1987. It's also the last time LSU played a top 10 non-conf. matchup at home.

The 2007 Florida game was tension filled slugfest throughout vs. the defending national champions in hated rivalry. Compare that with 2003 Georgia. It was against a good opponent. But one LSU rarely played. Thus, the "hate" factor wasn't there. More than that, it was a game where LSU just seemed to hang around as UGA blew chances (missed FGs, turnovers in LSU's red zone, etc). The Florida game never let up, and gave us the most surreal non-action moment this century when the crowd/LSU sideline went absolutely nuts after Dan Borne's announced, during the TV timeout after an LSU touchdown, that USC had lost to Stanford. An already big game became huge at that point because everyone in the stadium knew a win would put LSU at No. 1 in the rankings.

The Auburn game had an even more dramatic finish than the 2003 Georgia game. Then LSU got to go, on the road, and face/beat Nick Saban for the fist time at Alabama. A game with one of the greatest plays LSU fans rarely talk about. The do-or-die 4th down TD to Early Doucet...followed by the Chad Jones sack/fumble that essentially won the game. That season also had the crushing disappointment of the shocking Arkansas loss where it felt like LSU blew the national championship. I've never heard it quieter leaving Tiger Stadium than after that game (maybe 2012 Alabama).

Then you had the absolute wildness of championship Saturday It started with the rumors being confirmed that Les was leaving for Michigan...until he told everyone to "have a great day!" It ended with an absolutely crazy night of watching everything fall into place for LSU (Missouri losing to OU and Pitt shocking WVU).

2003 was the year the unimaginable happened.
2011 was the great ride spoiled at the end
2019 was the most fun because we've never seen a more dominant LSU team. Before or since.

2007 will always be the wildest. So while you may pat yourself and the fanbase on the back for the ONE time they didn't melt into catastrophe following a huge blow in the game...that one game doesn't come close to the wildness of the 2007 season.
