It's not just Alabama that takes liberties with claiming National Championships.

Tennessee claims 6 national championships while the NCAA lists them with only 2 titles (1951 and 1998). They legitimately claim 4 titles that are nowhere to be found on the NCAA website including 1967 when then went 9-2 despite USC being awarded by the AP and UPI.

Two takeaways...one, Tennessee's reputation as a traditional power is definitely shaped by claimed national championships, and two, the fear of looking like Alabama by claiming 1908 is misplaced (ie many other schools claim national titles that aren't even recognized by the NCAA).

Claim 1908. It's waaaay more defendable and the right thing to do.

According to the NCAA website, LSU has won 5 national championships and Tennessee has won 2 national championships. While we can't control what others do, we should at least do our part to properly reflect history.

we were reigning national champs from 07 AND it was the 100th anniversary

Hopefully we claim it in the next few years

This should be duck soup. All these weisenheimers and goops who refuse to give our boys the glory they earned on the gridiron are like Custer on the hill. I have half a mind to whip them with my buggy whip !

*As it might have appeared in 1908.

Ehh. Anything over a century should not count. Only 100 titles should be claimed at any given point. Whoever won the 1920 title losses it this year.LSU would have won 4% of all national titles EVER

Because this is in my geek-ometer sweet spot. Whereas your overall premise is legitimate, here are a few things about Tennesssee's 1967 claim. The Vols finished the regular season 9-1 and lost their bowl game to Oklahoma, 26-24 in the Orange Bowl. 1967 was the final season that the AP awarded its champion prior to the bowls. Tennessee was #2 and Southern Cal was #3.

For reasons I have yet to piece back together, not only did the AP award their title prior to the bowl games being played (FWIW, Southern Cal did win the Rose Bowl that season beating Indiana), the AP awarded their title prior to the regular season being completed. Tennessee rose to #2 in early Nov and stayed there even with the #1 team at the time losing twice in that timeframe.

Tennessee only retroactively started claiming these around 2004 or 2005. Honestly some teams' "non AP/UPI" claims are legit IMO, most notably Ole Miss' 1960 title.

As for Alabama, it is fun to tweak them about some of the titles they claim. But just keep in your back pocket, they were hosed , at least in a "share" of a title in 1945,1966 and 1977.

I’m in where do we sign?

Admin has plenty of time right now to add a flag and a trophy to the case.

Michigan claims a couple of titles from the same first decade of the 1900s where the only group awarding them the national championship is the same group that awarded LSU 1908. 1903 and 1904. NCF.. the National Championship Foundation.

Michigan is the same as Tennessee. They claim 11 national titles. 11 fricking national titles.

Michigan only has TWO poll era titles and in 1997 they split it.

The 1908 team, led by the great Doc Fenton, should be recognized for the title they earned on the field.

5. In 1908, Wingard led his LSU team to a record of 10–0. The team has been recognized as a national champion by the National Championship Foundation, although LSU does not officially claim a national title that season.

If there was a Heisman trophy in 1908, Doc Fenton should have won it.

Some people will say titles from100 years ago don’t matter. But they do for overall program rankings. This is why Tennessee is still mentioned as a top 10-12 program

Just FYI, the trash outfit that awarded OM the 1960 NC is the same outfit that awarded LSU the 1962 National Championship.

To further highlight how much of an outlier LSU is on the topic, LSU is the ONLY SEC school to claim fewer national championships than the NCAA.

Alabama claims 17 national titles, NCAA recognizes 15
Auburn claims 5 national titles, NCAA recognizes 2
Arkansas claims 1 national title, NCAA recognizes 1
Florida claims 3 national titles, NCAA recognizes 3
Georgia claims 2 national titles, NCAA recognizes 1
LSU claims 4 national titles, NCAA recognizes 5
Ole Miss claims 3 national titles, NCAA recognizes 1
Tennessee claims 6 national titles, NCAA recognizes 2
Texas A&M claims 3 national titles, NCAA recognizes 2
