I was thinking about the same thing about Hess. I wish McKay would get back soon. He seems like a logical choice for midweek starts. Would give us the ability to put Hess in the bullpen.

It was the best pitching he has seen.
Last summer was a lower level of college players.
The TCU, Baylor and Texas Tech staffs are as good as any he will see in the SEC.
He wasn't the only one that struggled offensively.
He'll be fine though.

My one takeaway this weekend is lack of bullpen depth.

Bain
Newman
Peterson had one bad outing but he will be fine.
Reynolds
Hess will be moved to the bullpen if him and Walker continue as they are.
Kiel has look good for the most part

This bullpen might be the deepest it has been in a few years.

TCU, maybe. They've been bad so far this year though. Baylor and TT? No. .

You forgot Gilbert.

Off the bandwagon.... not getting crushed by the inevitable failures that will undoubtedly happen. Same issues that have been plaguing this team the past few years are the same ones that reared their ugly head this weekend. No timely hitting mixed with a below average pen.....

Depth is decent, i do think we need to develop a lefty out of the pen, whether its bush or frederik

Sure did. The bullpen outside of 3 or 4 innings has been pretty good.

Reynolds and Kiel have been fairly inconsistent.

Walker is staying on Sundays. I also didn't include Hess since he is starting during the week. I did say that I think they would be better as the season progresses.

Reynolds and Kiel had one bad outing their first time and have been pretty solid since. Hess will be moved to the bullpen during SEC play. You have Walker as your number three guy and Bain Hess or maybe even Gilbert can be a 4th starter but you don't need that until postseason. You go with your best guys during the weekend in conference and play each week night game on a game by game basis.

Bain, Reynolds, Kiel, Gilbert, Peterson, Newman. That was our pen this weekend. They had to throw 12 innings which is way above normal. Peterson gave up 3 runs, the rest gave up 3 combined. 5 walks, 13 Ks total.

If they haven't already come out and said this will happen, I am skeptical that it will.

You lost me at Paul didn't make any bad pitching decisions. Come on man. You don't leave Peterson in for most of the 7th yesterday.

Why would you save one of your better arms for a meaningless midweek game during conference play?

His typically bullpen day is on the weekend anyway. Should let him get an inning or two IMO, even if it's during garbage time to save innings for the others.

He faced 4 batters and got 1 out (the last batter he faced). Newman got ready as quickly as he could. When would you have pulled him?

ETA: Also, Newman faced 4 batters as well that inning. Got 2 outs. So in no way did Peterson pitch "most of the 7th"

This is a constant problem with Mainieri. We never get guys up in the pen until trouble has started. Remember on Friday night when we laughed at TCU for having three guys throwing phantom pitches in the pen. Well, there were three guys that could have potentially been ready to go if needed in a hurry.

At some point you got to see what your freshman can do against a quality opponent. Can he get out of a jam? Can he control his emotions? How does he bounce back? Like it or not what happened yesterday was quality teaching moment you can't get except in that situation. It sucks because it lead to a loss but in the long run it might be better for the player.

We need to shake up the order. Move Josh Smith down to 9 and move someone like Slaughter/Romero/Coomes behind Deichmann.

I was happy to see Romero playing well again. I kinda thought he had lost his spot but after this weekend it's going to be tough to not give him at bats.
