Takeaways from the Shriner's Tourney

First, let me say that I love this tournament. Huge LSU presence, solid teams, good format, excellent location. If you went, you shouldn't have any complaints. In fact, it was much better than 2 years ago simply because the concessions weren't nearly as big of a cluster.
Second, most posters here know that I'm no PM fan but I don't have many complaints about him this weekend. I do have one specific one I'll touch on later, but it has nothing to do with the pitching. And I do have a general takeaway concerning coaching (hitting). So, Positives and Negatives:
Positives:
- Poche. This one is easy and needs no explanation.
- Bain. He's our MVP behind Poche for the tournament IMO. What he was able to do Friday saved our bullpen the rest of the weekend basically nulling Lange's bad outing from that perspective.
- Coomes. Showed that he can be a legit backup behind the plate.
- Romero. 4 for 10 on the weekend. I'll take that along with the power he provides. I know Woley is the hot name now and I was honestly surprised he sat 2 games in a row after the week he had, but getting Jordan going may be more important in the long run.
- Walker. Again, for obvious reasons.
Negatives:
- Lange. Just getting it out of the way. It's been touched on in a few threads, but I'm hearing more info confirming my speculation that the 30 minute delay bothered him. Do I think his struggles continue? No. Friday's weather looks good...
- Pap. We all know he's better than what we saw this weekend.
- Hitting adjustments. Here's the coaching point that I want to discuss. Remember how Andy C. would often bring the team together mid-game when we were struggling offensively. I think we're missing that kind of leadership. Gibbs is very analytics driven, but what, if anything, is he doing for our hitters after the first AB or two?
- I DO NOT think PM made any pitching "mistakes" this weekend. I did, however, get bothered by one call and it was in the game we won. WHY is he calling a hit and run with Coomes at 1B and Beau batting... when Coomes just got walked on 4 pitches... when Coomes is slow af... when Beau isn't a groundball hitter... when it's just the 3rd inning and it's not like Beau is in a slump (like Dup, which I thought was a great call vs UNO)... when Beau is facing a RHP for the first time this year... This may seem trivial over the whole weekend, but it truly grinds my gears. Can anyone give a rational explanation for it?

He didn't leave Peterson in too long yesterday?

Not imo. My beef with Strall vs. UNO was that you already knew what you had in Strall and were putting him in during a rally that was already going. With TP, he started the 7th and he's young. I have no problem with how he was handled, because I think 8 times out of 10, he's got good enough stuff to get out of that situation.

On board with all observations.
Question:
Did Slaughter make two base running errors?
1) Should have tagged on second base vs. Baylor when ball was hit to the center field wall?
2) LSU has runners on 1st (Slaughter) and 3rd base with one out vs. TT. Romero was batting. Slaughter stole second and was thrown out by a mile. Did he miss a single or was Romero supposed to swing?

Shitty relief pitching and no timely hitting should be on PMs headstone.
I agree with all your positives.

quote:Yes. 100%. No outs, ball in Right Center. He slipped though trying to get back to the bag quickly. He should have been on 3B with 1 out.

It is alarming that Papierski is still having problems defensively. That's supposed to be the best part of his game. His blocking of the ball down to third base is eerily similar to the struggles he had last year. I hope it is just a bad weekend.
Additional takeaway:
I'm a selfish a-hole and the constant Shriner's shilling during the games took away from my enjoyment. I get pimping the sponsor, but when there is a ton of action going on, I'd prefer we focus on the game rather than some guy I don't care about murking up the broadcast.

Another positive is I think Russ had maybe his best outing ever.

The deal with Pap is if he isn't saving you runs with elite level defense (or worse he is actually costing you runs), he can't play. We've got plenty of guys that can do what he did or better in the field and have bats that are worth having in the lineup.

I get it, but I can't fully agree here. I know it makes it harder to watch and enjoy, and I would be in full agreement if this were Random Corporate Sponsor.
But this is a charitable organization trying to spread awareness and generate donations. So, while I'd rather just watch the game, for them, I'll grin and bear it.

This team will win 40 games this season despite CPM. Don't look past hosting a regional.

taking a pitcher out -sometimes & it is early in the year - you try to see how he battles!
florida coach pulls his pitchers out @ the first sign of trouble - do not like this! case in point! lange has had problems & has shown he can come back - also if the pitcher throws & locates as called - or if the batter makes a good or lucky swing or hit- could also be that the ump is the problem!
for the most part - let the coaches - coach!

If a player can't hit consistently and isn't at the top defensively, what should a coach do? One more weekend and a couple mid-week games left to iron things out.

Was our relief pitching bad when we had Rumbelow and Cotton closing games for us? Or Goody? Or Ott early on? I think folks have a short memory sometimes. I think Gilbert in the 8th and Newman in the 9th will be a reliable, but perhaps not dominant, tandem.
Yes, PM does tend to stay with some pitchers too long. I agree with that, although I like it when he does that early in the year so the pitchers have to work through adversity.
One trend I have noticed about Rant posters (not you) - if the hitting is good, credit Cannizaro (or Gibbs). If it is poor, blame PM.
If the pitching is good, credit Dunn, If not, blame PM.

What is your take on the several base runners early on who were caught stealing?
The commentators were talking about possible stolen signs. I never saw a good enough camera angle to know if it was poor jumps by the baserunners, good coaching by TT, or if there was any merit to the comments by the commentators.
I agree with the commentators that it is rare to see 2 pitch outs in a row to go from 1-1 to 3-1.
