5 were previous HC’s and 6 were previous coordinators/position coaches.

Outside of Lane, none of the names are coming here. We probably don’t get Lane.

G5 HC coaches should not be in discussion imo. Sumrall can go to Kentucky. Another sunbelt billy.

Go after elite coordinators on P5 team that win

Also, any head coach we want that’s coaching is going to the playoff, we can’t afford to wait that long. Besides maybe Key and Dillingham. We can poach a coordinator before then.

It’s not the sexy answer and everyone will hate it. The guy that sticks out is OSU’s Hartline.

Why does he stick out? He’s been a play caller for like 2 months.

What makes Sumrall another Sunbelt Billy?

Inherited Fritz’s doing. If we’re going program building, Golesh is a better guy.

Hartline is risky but young. Embrace WRU with his history and working with one of the best offenses in college football.

You can give him an ED O type deal and we keep our defensive staff.

Penn state is giving him a hard look. We should be too. You want the best up and comers. Golesh is a Heupel disciple that I like but I’m really bullish on Hartline. He knows how to recruit. Can really excite the team with his energy. We can put a very a good staff around hon

If they’re Coaching on a “successful “ team that’s still in it, they’re not going to accept a HC job here during the season. It’ll have to be next January.

Are we ignoring his success at Troy?

Like Saban was when he came here? And Les Miles?

All of your rules of thumb are wrong. Go get a smart, affable, dedicated, ambitious, competitive coach with enough of a resume to indicate that he knows how programs are built. It doesn’t matter what program he comes from. Get that guy and you will win. And none of us know who that guy is. It is discovered by casting a wide net, interviewing and checking references. And it has to be carried out by someone with a keen eye for people, and that guy is not named Scott Woodward.

BTW, it’s not too late to do that search, but it should have been done already.

Why do you think we don't get Lane? This is a much better job than Ole Miss...

Sumrall may be sunbelt, but he's not a sunbelt Billy.

My counter argument is that the guys we’d want are all going to the playoffs or former players now HC at their Alma mater.

Dillingham, Keys and Clark Lea would be my top three of current coaches. I think the biggest point here is that this ain’t the old CFB. We need a young guy that’s integrated into the new ways of CFB with NIL and portal. There’s not a lot of new blood out there doing that. That’s why I’m so bullish on an elite young P5 coordinator

Hartline wasn’t the OC last year. It was Chip Kelly

Most HC’s they would want are probably still playing for something significant unless they’re looking at G5 schools where there is a low probability to get into the playoffs, whether they win or not.

Mainly, I think looking at a coach’s total body of work is important, which is hard to do with some of those young coaches. Young ones are usually either HC’s at smaller programs or good Coordinators at the larger ones.

When they are up to 40 or so, they usually don’t have a large body of work to look at unless they have risen quickly. Those might have problems handling the pressure of a place like LSU.

Not saying it’s impossible. Just kinda like looking for a needle in a haystack. Those have usually worked for more than one year in a specific coaching tree. That requires someone who can really evaluate and conduct a good search.

I don’t have any confidence that Woodward has what it takes to conduct such a search

Isn’t Lea at his Alma Mater? He seems happy there and they have given him everything he needs to succeed and they are still in the playoff hunt.

Besides, I would want to see what he can do without Pavia
