Exactly. It's not like LSU is a football powerhouse like Kentucky, UCLA, or Indiana that you can just to into and build a winner.

the OP's standard of winning the NC isn't the right one. It should be being seriously in the hunt.

Kirby was in the NC game in year 2.
Saban won the SEC in year 2 at LSU
Saban made it to the SEC championship in year 2 at Bama
Ryan Day won the Big Ten championship in year 1
Cignetti turned around one of the worst programs in the country, making the playoffs in year 1 and winning the NC in year 2
And one you omitted was Urban Meyer, who won the Mountain West at Utah in year one, and won the NC at Florida in year 2.

It actually DOESN'T take time to build a program if the right guy is at the helm, and even less so with today's NIL and portal.

** this isn't a bashing of Kiffin - I like the hire and think he's the right guy. Just saying that things can be turned around almost immediately.

Indiana proved everything you suggest to be WRONG. Cignetti is 35-3 in the conference that has won the last three national championships. And he did it at the school with the worst record in college football historically before he came on board.

I agree Cignetti is an accomplished phenomenon even he has not always been uber successful. He has a plethora of awards and titles if you look at his wiki… all since 2020. He is 65 so it took him til he was 59 to develop his system??

Also there are some good coaches out there but there are no current Cignettis out there running around loose so dont make him the standard by which all are judged.

And the lines are really where you need to build and develop for multiple years. OL portal additions have been a mixed bag for us

For those of you who keep beating the Cignetti could do it drum:

He brought his core from JMU. To spell it out plainly, he had a chunk of players that already knew his system.

Lane has a roster full of folks who are first time players in the system.

We have interior blocking issues. I would expect that to be fixed in the offseason. We have a punter problem who has given opponents 14 points in two losses. We have had a plague of injuries that has snake bitten this team. Green isn’t back to form yet, and I guarantee you a healthy Weeks would have been an impact in last night’s game.

Yes I am pissed we lost but yall are acting like we lost to Troy. Alabama usually has our number in Baton Rouge (and why I hate them more than any other opponent).

The top teams don’t import players to the tune of 61% of their roster with portal guys but we had to this season to upgrade the talent level. You're going to gamble doing this and we missed on a couple Oline spots but Kiffin was top 5 in player retention at Ole Miss without the resources he has here. People who are thinking this mass overhaul is going to continue the way it has the past few years are conflating Kelly with someone who doesn’t do that.

Nope, #1 transfer portal, and 46mil payroll.....win now! Hell, most of the good TPers will be gone next year!

They think you just buy titles now and year 1 is no exception. Thats why the monetary number keeps growing, need to exaggerate it since the logic doesn’t hold.

I mean you pretty much do if you have a competent coach. Every year the roster flips as if it’s year 1. They didn’t lose to Bama and ole Miss because Kiffin needs more time. This roster is super talented

Completely incorrect, the teams who retain the most players consistently stay at the top of CFB. (OSU, ORG, UGA, Tex) and if you could just buy titles the team who paid the most would just win the title. That hasn’t happened. What’s happening here is fans have seen Kelly tear down and do 1 year rebuilds the whole time he was here and Kiffin had to do it this year so they just think that’s how it is but Kiffin was near the top of CFB in retention at OM so that’s not his model at all.

Just 2 more cents as a neutral:

-Lane is an excellent coach, flat out. Nobody's perfect though.

-Year 1 of Kirby was a very painful 8-5 with embarrassing losses to Tech, Florida, and VANDY

-Year 1 Saban was even worse, famously going 6-6 and losing to a Sunbelt team

-Lane kept building OM several years in. He took what he learned in his 10 win seasons & kept improving the team. When he finally got a truly elite QB (not just a decent/good QB) he had elite results. His 24 & 25 teams especially have been different on the LOS too.

Imo he is going to put you in position every year & be in the expanded playoffs at a minimum. No defensive coach wants to face LK, he is going to win some even if you get the better of him like Bama this year.

Remind me which of these coaches at that time had access to a pool of over a thousand players, many of whom with multiple years of college football experience.

The irony is the guy the "it's year 1" excuse brigade is defending is actually the example of how a great team can be built in one offseason. Ole Miss had 50+ new players last season. Among that group was (what would be) the starting QB, RB, 3 top WRs, multiple OL, along with their leader in sacks and TFLs. You might have seen him wearing #1 for LSU yesterday. For all intents and purposes that was a "new team". While it may have been year 6 for the HC, it was "year 1" for that particular team.

Next year's LSU team will have a lot of new faces in key positions too. That's just the nature of the sport now. So are we going be in and endless loop of "year 1"?

You do realize when the Nil/Transfer portal era began don't you? To not acknowledge how big of a difference that makes is egregious.

It’s not though but the teams that are most talented usually have great success. How do you get talented players? You spend a lot of money. What’s LSU’s excuse? Indiana is the outlier bc they aren’t in the SEC. All the teams that retained the most from last year are garbage this year. Here are roster retention rankings for the teams you listed

Uga- 11th
Texas- 37th
Oregon and OsU- not even listed in the top 50

I’m talking about since NIL started, I should’ve clarified. These programs are built, they’re not single season buys. We only retained 28% of our roster and brought in over 61% in the portal. That’s your base, Kiffin had a high retention rate while at OM, I don’t think we see these high numbers moving forward

BK went 9-3 his first year here and took over arguably a worse situation than LK.

Again I'll say this - LK may well win the SEC next year and we'll all go on to live happily ever after. I hope that is the case I'm an LSU fan and I want LSU to win always in everything.

But this snowflake angst over anything that brushes against criticism of Lane is not necessary. He's the head coach an SEC football power, it comes with the territory and quite frankly he's earned some of it. He'll be here next year and have plenty of time to prove his worth.
