I don't want Stingley playing on offense b/c he is too valuable and we don't want to risk injury.
BUT, i am increasingly concerned about not having HR hitters on offense other than Boutte.
No capable TE, no star RB's, holes or lack of depth on OL ...
Points may be hard to come by this year.

I just find it funny that people here are so quick to say “oh well I guess you know more than the coaches, blah blah”, but in this case the coaches have said that he would play offense, and people are downvoting and hating into oblivion.

How much more likely he is he to get hurt playing offense than defense? Let’s say he plays 3-4 offensive plays a game, that would equate to less plays than just having one extra game throughout the course of the season, also he could just be taken off of punt return and it would even out.

Fair question, but impossible to quantify additional risk.
I think every additional play increases chances of injury, but here is asked a play one or positions he is much less familiar with and has less experience in taking hits. As a ball carrier, he is the target, not just another player .

I would take that to mean that the staff has no confidence at all in the young receivers. I don't know who will eventually separate from the pack but I'm confident that one will. Hopefully more than one

We have had some incredible young receivers, including Chase most recently.
It usually takes a couple of years for a WR to learn the ropes, although some argue 7 on 7 is reducing that timeframe.
I think the message may be that we have talent, but need help this year from someone in addition to Boutte. Options at TE and RB aren't the best for additional targets.

I’m hoping Koy Moore steps up, he showed some flashes last year. And Jenkins is solid. Also like you said, we could have some new guys that contribute, seems like we almost always do.

No comment on what that D stands for in DrD.

No, I disagree. Stingley needs to concentrate and focus entirely on being the best cornerback he can be in his final season. So that he can become a top-five pick.

Playing offense would only take away from that concentration and focus.

At most I could see Stingley going into a one or two games to be used strictly as a decoy.

We've got enough receivers to where that isn't necessary.

Also, receivers have a lot of mental adjustments and reads. This isn't Woodson's day when all he had to do was run down and out or run a post.

Just my opinion. It's his last season in college and if he can make a few plays offensively per game he could be another Charles Woodson (Michigan heisman winner) plus it would help the Tigers win all their games and make it back to playoffs.

You say that now but the first time he turns it over/gets hurt(god forbid) you will be the first one calling for O's head.

He doesn’t need to play offense.

But “he might get hurt” is not the reason why.

Everyone risks getting hurt any time they step on the field. Stingley playing offense is no more risky than him returning punts, and I’m old enough to remember when threads saying he shouldn’t return punts because “he might get hurt” were blasted as dumb.

He doesn’t need to play offense because we already have offensive players. That’s all.

How about a blindside block?

If he goes in, I hope it’s to be as a decoy. I get he’s a great player, and I don’t get to see him at practice, but in all the times I’ve watched him return punts, he has been underwhelming. I hope they just keep him on Defense..

That may be so, but that's still no reason to risk anymore than you already are. There's a grey area there that Stingley already operates within.

This is all a moot point anyway, since Stingley's dad has already said on the radio that Derek himself has scrapped the idea of playing offense because "that's not what he's going to be doing in the pros"

People go to Charles Woodson so much when talking about DBs playing on O, but a year after Woodson, Champ Bailey was much more productive as a receiver while also playing cornerback (All-American and Bronko Nagurski Trophy) with Georgia.

Woodson (1997) - 11 Catches, 231 Yards, 2 TDs

Bailey (1998) - 47 Catches, 744 Yards, 5 TDs

Bailey also had more Rushing Yards. If Stingley can add some juice to the O, I'd like to see it.
