Stats that show just how small the margin between 1st and 14th is in SEC baseball

Georgia is 20-6 and 1st. LSU is 9-17 and 14th.
11 game difference.
Here are comparative stats over the 26 SEC games.
Runs scored
Georgia = 201 or 7.73 per game
LSU = 175 or 6.73 per game
A 1.00 run difference per game.
Runs allowed
Georgia = 151 or 5.81 per game
LSU = 182 or 7.00 per game
A 1.19 run difference per game.
Net scoring (runs scored - runs allowed)
Georgia = 201 - 151 = 50 or 1.92 per game
LSU = 175 - 182 = -7 or -0.27 per game
A 2.19 run difference per game.
LSU walks allowed by pitching = 154 (tied for 15th (last) and 10 more than 14th; more than double of what 1st and 2nd teams have).
LSU wild pitches = 46 (last and 9 more than 15th; 5 times more than 1st team)
LSU unearned runs allowed = 22 (last and more than double of what top 4 teams have).
Extra baserunners due to walks and errors, extra bases taken on wild pitches are what lead to allowing more runs.
Georgia's overall pitching is not much better than LSU's other than fewer walks and much fewer wild pitches.
Georgia hits and slugs at a much higher level (1st in OPS at .938) which overcomes their average pitching. LSU hitting is above average in the SEC this year (5th in OPS at .814) but would have to be 2023-like to overcome the poor pitching control and fielding.

Baseball as everyone knows is a game of percentages. Those numbers indicate who is good at the game and who is not. Details big and small affect those numbers. Do them well you win, do them badly you lose. These tigers do them badly

Probably not going to be a popular take but we were a few small pieces away from being a very solid team this year. The lack of a reliable closer was a huge issue, as were the injuries to the rotation and other guys not stepping up.
Not to mention this was probably the least clutch team I’ve ever witnessed in any sport at LSU, these guys just folded over and over and made enough little league mistakes in key moments to make a 7u Traction team blush. They weren’t ever going to make noise in Omaha but they could’ve easily hosted and won a regional

I said it when it happened that Cooper Moore’s injury was huge. 4-6 wins between him and Evans and this team is squarely in the tournament,
To the OPs post, the runs scored the last several weeks and better defensive play would have made them a threat.
Pitching to spots is key to success defensively as much as anything,
Didn’t have the stats to back it up and glad the OP made this post.

I don’t consider a 2-run net scoring difference, per game, over the course of 26 games to be a small margin.

All of these stats are true. Margins are pretty damn thin.
That said, LSU has had talent. They have not been good at critical times in games… they don’t get the clutch hit, they give up 1 or 2 big innings every game. That separates winners and losers unfortunately.
I hope we can keep the young guys on the roster and fill a couple key places…
As the season has worn on, more and more I hope we can keep both arrambide and Serna on this roster for next year!

A slight thumb on the scale by blue in critical moments can make the difference.
Usually those mistakes even out over all games unless the SEC in Birmingham absolutely doesn’t want a repeat champion or a team and coach that got honored by Trump.

Walks are what cost LSU this season. Their number indicates that they often issue multiple walks per inning. Batting statistics and their other pitching statistics are generally fine.

Jesus!! I’ve watched every game this season and didn’t realize this.

I will never understand why so many fans think that the SEC wants LSU to be bad at baseball.

Agree with this. Would like to see a stat on how many runs were scored after an error extended an inning.

There you go bashing again. Do you just wait for someone to post something wrong or you disagree with someone and you just wait to pounce on that post and bash that poster? Because that's all you do. Bash bash bash.
