quote:

Former Stanford star Andrew Luck is returning to the Cardinal to become the football program's general manager, Luck told ESPN in a phone interview. Luck, 35, has accepted a newly created role at Stanford, which will place him above the entire program and is a distinct evolution from the traditional college general manager role. The hire could loom as a harbinger for structural changes in college football front offices across the sport.

quote:

Luck's role involves everything Stanford football touches, both football and business-wise. The football-specific duties of his role will include managing the coaching staff, player personnel staff, recruiting, roster management and student-athlete experience.

I love this and kinda wish LSU would do this also. If they ever do, it would have to be a star football alum such as Burrow, Daniels, Honey Badger, etc. as I’m sure that would help with NIL fundraising and it wouldn’t hurt to have someone in that position who truly loves LSU, and the Honey Badger truly loves LSU.

What do y’all think of this? I kind of love it.

I think it's a great idea and expect it will become the standard, at least for top dollar athletic programs.

College football has had "general managers" for years now but they seem to be more of a recruiting manager and roster evaluator type of position that serves at the head coaches pleasure and desires.

I've been waiting for college football to take a shift towards pro programs and create a general manager in the pro style mold. Where the GM is superior to the head coach. GM would be in charge of building the roster, hiring the HC etc.

Luck will be fantastic in this role

Not sure we have had any high profile players that would be a great fit

Mawae is the one I think of the most

Good luck hiring a Sabanesque talent as HC with someone peering over his shoulder, putting their thumb and critiquing, weighing in on his every move.

Most top notch HC’s (8-10 current coaches) would say no thanks, I’ve got this.

part of the problem with these obscene, one-sided, golden parachute contracts is that there is no oversight, no system of checks and balances, no link of performance and compensation, to hold these clowns' feet to the fire, just give them a blank check and let them have free reign

Correct sir, right now no one really knows.
It’s all wishful thinking right now.

A multi million dollar layer between the HC and AD. Sure why not.

The landscape has changed, it’s just too much for a D1 head coach now to manage roster management, year round recruiting, the portal, the NIL, collectives, finances. The HC position has evolved. I think it will be a collaboration between HC in particular on what positions, players garnish more money, but for the HC to do it all is a pretty tall task.

He is extremely bright. Like real world intelligent. Not just “academic player of the week 3.3 GPA in sports management” “smart”

He played QB so he also understands the actual world of football from the inside as well

His father has experience with pretty much this exact thing, meaning Andrew luck has grown up around it

Not a difficult concept Lester

Pridey, the concept of smart ex-football player was pretty obvious.

fundraising is one thing but complete decision-autonomy would be kind of crazy for someone with no backround in this, but then again there is zero risk on Stanford's part. They are a football nobody.

Austin Thomas was GM for LSU back in 2016 & was the first person in College Football to have that title.

He is back now but official title is Senior Associate AD for Football Administration

I mean part of the reason Saban retired was because he didn’t want to deal with that type of shite…

Kelly would be a better GM than coach. Maybe then we could hire someone who knows how to field a team that’s ready to play.
