Anthony Ranaudo

Manager John Farrell had a chance to watch pitching prospects Anthony Ranaudo and Brandon Workman in their first intrasquad game Friday morning at the team’s spring training complex.

Ranaudo, a supplemental first-round pick in 2010 out of LSU who fell to the Red Sox at 39th overall after an elbow injury, and Workman, a second-round pick in 2010 who was the 2012 Pitcher of the Year in the organization’s farm system, are both expected to start the season at Double-A Portland.

“You’re looking at two big, strong right-handed pitchers with a lot of promise and a lot of talent,” Farrell said. “Two innings of a sim intrasquad in spring training, I mean, it’s just a look at their delivery and just to see them execute on the mound. It’s not under the microscope, by any means.”

Kevin Gausman

Making his fourth appearance this spring, Gausman pitched so effectively that he was sent out for a third inning. He allowed two singles, no walks, no runs and struck out three batters, including Boston outfielder Jonny Gomes twice.

The 22-year-old, who was taken with the fourth pick of the 2012 draft out of LSU, threw an impressive 25 of his 33 pitches for strikes. His fastball sat between 94 and 96 mph and he hit 98 mph once.

Jared Mitchell

In the seven Cactus League games Mitchell has played, he has collected five hits in 13 at-bats for a .385 batting average. More importantly, his 1.275 OPS has shown impressive run-producing capabilities.

Just yesterday at the LSU baseball game several of us were wondering how J. Mitchell is doing.

Very interesting information. Thanks!

Thank you. This is the link I have been waiting for.

It's good to see former Tigers doing well.

No problem. As for a few others, Mike Mahtook is apparently developing quite well in the Tampa Bay system. Ochinko and Schimpf (Blue Jays system) are still have a ways to go, but apparently Ochinko was asked to spring training, and he got an RBI double in his pinch hit appearance vs. the Yankees.

Is Matty Ott doing anything, did he get drafted or signed by anyone?

Sean Ochinko was working out at Max fitness a couple of months ago. I thought he gave up on the minors, guess not

Nope, he is actually valued pretty high by Toronto.

This also goes to show how talented a lot of players were on the '09 National Championship team and the year leading up to it.

DJ LeMahieu is starting 2nd base for the Rockies and Louis Coleman had a stint in the bigs with KC (did he get dropped back to AAA or is he still there?)

I think that had Mitchell and Ranaudo not gotten injured upon their arrival to the minors, they might be in the bigs right now.

On Jared Mitchell:

The 24-year old could end up in Chicago by the end of the season, but first there is some work to do.

I hope he makes it.

He started for the rockies last year by default with injuries to Tulo and Helton. 2013 will be much tougher for playing time unless Tulo gets hurt again. Rutledge has 2nd locked up and Nelson and/or Prospect Arenado will be at third.

Pacheco will be backup at 1st and third so that kills LeMahieu as a primary utility guy.

Mahtook's WAR stat is -.5

Scrub Player = 0-1 WAR

He hasn't even played in the majors yet so how has he accumulated any WAR? Link?

I didn't realize that. However, I know that once they called up DJ he stepped in a caused a stir for that team, so I would suspect that he will get more than enough playing time, even if he isn't initially a starter.

I forgot about Ott. Not sure how. I always felt that he left LSU a little early.
