Thanks Bay Tiger

Extremely impressive to see Milam and Larson's lack of K's for freshmen. Zero strikeouts in 27 AB's for Milam and only 2 strikeouts in 23 AB's from Larson.

You just don't see that often.

games playing catcher:

Milazzo (9)
Travinski (7)
Neal (6)
Jones (4)
Frey (3)

I said in the preview thread, that we would see Jones behind the plate. I know the coaching staff is very confident in Jones' ability to catch. He's only at 1B b/c we are stacked behind the plate. It's already going to be hard to fit him in the catching rotation after the first couple of weeks. If he keeps batting the way he has been, he won't see much playing time at 1B either. You can have a catcher that can't hit if his defense is that good, but no one wants a 1B that can't get on base.

Another interesting stat is Cam Johnson WHIP being one of the highest on the team but he did not give up an ER in the spring.

I haven't seen Jones catch, but I'm assuming he's not on the level of Neal or Milazzo. Hell, even Travinski showed nice improvements defensively. Two out of those three can also rake.

36 PA and never got sat down swinging or watching a pitch. Pretty impressive and reinforces 'put the ball in play & good things can happen'.

I don’t see any scenario that Jones is catching besides mop up duty or maybe a midweek game, but even that is a stretch. He’s likely the third best catcher defensively and the third best catcher offensively. We have better options at that position.

It’ll take us a few weeks to get in our groove for sure and I expect us to experience rough patches for LSU baseball standards. Something like 15-3 before SEC play with 5 10-run victories will be fine.

For reference, we went 16-1 pre SEC play with 11 10-run victories last season and 14-3 with 5 10-run victories in 2022. I see a similar start that we had in Jay’s first year. We better have cleaner fielding this time around

A break down by innings is prob a more reliable number to use.

Jones isn’t going to catch much unless there is an injury to 2 of the catchers.

LSU was in a unique situation last year where the depth was short & an injury happened. So it was all hands on deck.

In a given year you hope to not cycle through that many starters.

I feel bad for Cam Johnson. The expectations put on him as so damn inflated. I hope the fan base gives him some grace

Jones is a good catcher, but I'm not saying he's going to replace Neal, Milazzo, and Travinski in the top 3 at that spot. I still think we will see him catch in the first 8 games b/c of the schedule.

With the amount of games that will be played in the next 2 weeks I'm sure the ones you mentioned will get starts. Anyone of Hurd, Holman, Jump, Coleman, Herring, Ack could get starts. I think you see Anderson with starts also and not sure how they plan to use Cam Johnson yet.

At this point I'm not expecting to see Jump start. Not this weekend anyway. I'm sure something is going on. Hopefully it's nothing to really worry about, but I'm sure he will be handled very cautiously this early.

The point of my post was that I know the coaches like him as a catcher, but there are 3 better options in front of him: Neal, Travinski, and Milazzo. They have 8 games in 10 days to start. We will see at least 5 pitchers start games in that time frame and I think we will see 4 different catchers play as well. I don't expect to see him play catcher much after the first couple of weeks short of some injuries somewhere. Neal and Trav will be in the lineup almost every day at C and DH. Milazzo will get mixed in some.

These stats are too small of a sample size to judge a pitcher. the Starters have the equivalent of 1 game. So 1 bad outing destroys the stats. It happens. We won't have a Skenes, but should be deeper. Plus as someone said, they could be working on something specific in an outing. Only thing possible to read is the number of innings, for Gage Jump. Since many have him penciled in as a weekend starter. He will either be on a very small pitch count or not start yet. But of course, we don't know all the details.

Great point. Jones and Ruddell had 30ks combined with similar number of at bats. Those freshmen are the real deal.

I’m very interested to see how the pitching staff turns out. I know we are going to be deeper, but I don’t think anyone is expecting any elite arms. Very curious to see how well it all fits together.

He played 30 something games his senior year of highschool and only stuck out, i think, 8 times.

He’s a grinder

I don't expect to see him start this weekend, but I still think his name should be included in starter candidates. That is why I have him with that group.

84 PA with 10 K for Milam in the fall and spring with all the Ks coming in the fall. That is very impressive and love to see a tough at bat at the plate. I think that kind of stuff will definitely get him early playing time.

I am not sounding the alarm bell, but this team's outlook looks very different if Hurd is still inconsistent and Jump isn't contributing.

Still have concerns about protecting White in the lineup. I was hoping that would be Jones coming into the year but it may have to be Travinski.

Good to see Kling with the .472 OBP. He has to play up to his potential this year. No one else on the roster has his combination of size, power, and speed.

Milazzo just can’t figure it out. Have to feel sorry for the kid
