I guess PM just decided to lie and say Helmers had looked better at 3rd. For what purpose would that serve? Seriously?

Nice try. Got something better?

Well if you knew then you should’ve shown your outrage before the first game.
I don’t always agree with ell and I’m not even sure what he said about the move before the weekend but I am going to say it’s a 90 percent chance he didn’t agree with it when CPM announced it because 90 percent (being extremely conservative with that percentage) of what CPM does ell doesn’t agree with it.

I’m serious. And most people were too distracted laughing at Bianco at SS benching one of the bright spots on offense to question Helmers at 3B two days in a row. I was laughing at it from the start. The people who know PM know what it was since that article came out about him moving Helmers to 3B after watching him at 1B for a day. It reeked of PM utilizing that powerful gut of his.

I’m sure you’re probably right, but it serves no purpose for PM to lie and say that Helmers had been better fielding the ball at 3rd. He clearly believed that he was more consistent in the field than the other options. ell can believe it was for PM’s ego all he wants. That’s still absurd and an easy cop out to say in hindsight.

quote:The kid had like 6 practices under his belt at 3B. PM never saw him play in high school. PM didn’t “know” or “believe” anything. He was taking a guess and crossing his fingers it worked out. He and the kid got exposed. That’s it. And it’s the simplest answer.
He clearly believed that he was more consistent in the field than the other options.

You don’t know how players are going to act when the lights come on and the games are real. I don’t think he was lying I just think he was completely wrong in his assessment.

Right. He moved him into the starting role at 3rd base after he just sucked it up in practice because he had a gut feeling. He obviously did well when they started working him there

yeah someone can be wrong. That doesn’t mean it was an ego decision. If the other two freshman weren’t earning the spot either then you have to pick one of them and he went with who he thought was going to be more solid defensively. Just so happens it didn’t work out and Helmers made multiple errors there.

quote:I didn’t say this. I’m telling you that PM didn’t know shite other than he played 3B in high school and that was news to him. Practice reps don’t mean anything at a place like 3B. Rarely do freshmen play there and when they do they suck. Imagine someone playing there who hadn’t taken legit ground balls in almost a year. Look at lsu history there. Again, PM was going on his gut. There are and were better options there. It’s not like you can argue that at this point.
he just sucked it up in practice

First of all, as a former college baseball player, there’s a HUGE difference from facing that “everyday” in practice compared to a live game situation. And even then there’s so much more to factor in. Does that 94 have movement or is it flat? Does that pitcher also have a changeup that looks like he’s throwing a 94 mph FB? So yeah, not a very hot take.

This
Unless you’re a former SS, it’s a tough-arse position for most players to be thrown into.
Live fire is very different. Whether it’s throwing, or footwork, or timing. Speed of the ball gets on you fast.
It’s hard to replicate in practice. And when you aren’t used to the position, and you make 1 error. It can snoball like it did

Look I agreed with what you’re saying, but since he was a 3rd baseman in high school I somehow doubt that he saw his hardest hit ball to date. I think the pressure played a major factor and I don’t think he’s as bad as he played or ell is making him out to be.

There are players who look great in practice but can’t handle the bright lights. There are pitchers who look fantastic in the bull pen with a coach chatting in their ear but collapse when they step on that mound 10”’mound under the bright lights.
Paul Maneiri really has no idea what he has at the moment in terms of his final line up. He thinks he knows where to start but he has a long way to go. He has no idea until the players prove themselves in front of the LSU fans. These fans calling for Maneiri’s head after the 2cnd game are either joking or they don’t understand the game.
Everybody in college baseball is going through this. I love how the people who "know baseball" are using this as an excuse, as if LSU is at some sort of disadvantage.

Most college 3B are former SS. It’s not new to the position either. Some of the best ones in MLB.. ARod... Chipper. But sure. Let’s try this kid who looked good picking a couple balls thrown across the diamond at 1B. It’s comical at this point.
