If Shaquille was so dominant in the NBA, how come he didn't do jack for LSU in the tourney?

Because his HC was not that impressive.

Shaq was pretty productive in the tournament for the most part as an individual.

The refs would foul him out... his play was better suited for NBA play. He just dominated everyone.

Still he holds quite a few records for LSU... it's not like he didn't do anything there

This. Seemed to have a habit of fouling early and often.

Zed, you hit the nail on the head. I'll never forget when Indiana was coached by Bobby Knight and LSU had a lead on them in the NCAA tourney. Knight stated that he looked down the court and saw who was coaching LSU and he wasn't worried. Dale Brown could recruit and motivate, but he didn't know how to coach. While he was the coach, we upset quite a few teams plus we got upset. That big lead we had on KY and how we lost that game, told me that it was time for a change.

I remember that game. Pitino came into the pmac with jamal mashburn and proceeded to win the game after being down by something like 40 points. It was the worst thing ive ever witnessed as an lsu fan minus this last football ncg

Awesome thread and responses.

Kentucky once led LSU by 40 and won, and Knight made his comment about Dale in the tourney and looking down seeing him with Shaq on the bench while Shaq had to have been in 10th grade that day.

shaquille put on one of, if not the best performance in the '92 tourney. against indiana, he had 36 points, a dozen or so rebounds, & made all of his free throws.
knight and indiana had no answer for him while we had no one that could guard calbert cheaney.
the difference in that game was free throws & indiana shooting very well from the floor.
anyone that watched that game might recall the big advantage the hoosiers had in free throws.
the refs tended to swallow their whistles on the lsu end of the floor. indiana went to the line twice as much and ended up winning by 10.
saying shaquille "didn't do jack for lsu in the tourney" is very inaccurate.

Dale Brown was a great coach but even the good ones dont win it all every year.

Example, DUKE and Coach K. They just lost to a #15 seed. Time to move on to next basketball season. We should have a solid season next year.

Down 31 with 15:00 to go. UK makes the biggest comeback in history.

That was sickening. I've never seen a team so hot in the 1st half - LSU. I've never seen a team so hot in the last 15:00 minutes - Kentucky.

LSU paid them back with The Bluegrass Miracle. That was unbelievable on every level. Those fans that were taking down the goal posts while we were winning the game probably still wake up in a sweat at night.

Dale Brown basketball was 5 billion times more exciting than what we have now. His last few years were a struggle, but he had an unbelievable run and LSU basketball was exciting as any in the country. Most people are still shocked to see that LSU has like three of the top 5 largest crowds ever in college basketball (held the record for a long time too).
