The best chance to win a natty is having Evans available to start game 3, but obviously you have to get there first.

A lot will be depending on the score and when he comes in, but since we are talking hypotheticals...if you have Evans come out to close out the 8th & 9th and keep his pitch count under 30, could he be ready to start Wednesday?

That would give him 3 days rest (or 4 days for that 1 poster). Would that be enough for Jay to run him out to start, or would he be more inclined to have him come out of the bullpen as part of the Johnny whole staff? Or possibly save him for the "if necessary" on Thursday or G1 of the championship series

Cowan still isn't out of play in a big park.. I know the outings haven't been sharp lately, but he could be the guy to preserve evans. Just have him on a short leash

I wouldn’t even be surprised if Eyanson closed out game 1.

0.0% chance, Jay might need medical attention if he decides this

1996 LSU opened the CWS with Wichita St. LSU was cruising to an opening round win when the bullpen started leaking runs and Wichita St was making a run. Who did Skip turn to? He told Kevin Shipp, LSU’s game 2 starter all season long, to head to the pen. Shipp was at the time in the dugout with tennis shoes on. He had to scramble to grab his spikes and go get loose. Shipp got the last couple of outs in the 9th inning and LSU advanced to the winners bracket.

If you win game 1, but lose game 2, you're still playing every single day. It's all hands on deck for the first TWO games. There's no extra benefit from just winning game 1 if you lose game 2.

True. You have a valid point.

I just think that Arkansas game is that important in the 2025 CWS

The only time he has done this was in the SEC tournament game 1 because he wanted 1 win there more than he wanted to advance.

i honestly think he did it because game 1 was not definite, and he wanted eyanson to get some work in on the mound, in a live game, while avoiding that scenario for almost 2 weeks IF we had lost game 1, him not see the mound in game 1, and thus no game 2.

It would be awfully tempting to give it to Shores with how he looked the other night.

No doubt. Even Williams looked incredibly good in all but one pitch, really.

Williams recorded 8 outs in his first 24 pitches

I forgot about that and I do think that was the primary driver and remember thinking that at the time. It's rough getting old

Bumped with the correct day in title so that you all can focus on serious replies.

Kade has been the game 1 starter all year with the exception of Arkansas little rock, but this question is more geared towards using Evans to secure a win against the other biggest threat in the bracket rather than saving him for game 3.

Game 1 is Saturday. Game 3 is Wednesday. If Jay needs Evans, he 100% pitches Saturday. Multiple innings if needed.

I suspect that to be the case. If that is the case, then LSU should be the favorite to win the game. If LSU is the favorite to win game 1, they should also be favored to win the championship because of how the bracket falls. Seems the betting markets are slightly mispriced towards Arkansas

Given the day break in between game 2 and game 3 on Monday and Wednesday, I'd expect Jay to go to Evans 100% for sure if it's a close ball game vs ARK. Also, no shade on the other 2 teams on our side of the bracket, but I feel like the ARK is the ONE to win.

The path to the NC is exponentially harder if you lose game 1. If LSU is up by just a run or two after 6 or 7 innings and you think Evans is the best chance to get you that win, you take it and worry about future games after that. Even if that means Evans is unavailable for game 2, or, if necessary, a game after that.

If you win the first two games you have the luxury of a margin for error in game 3...similar to what Wake Forest had in 2023. At that point even if you lose game 3, you have an ace ready to go in game 4 (like Lowder for Wake)

Yes, it would be GREAT not to have to use your 3rd best pitcher in game 1. But it would be a hell of a lot worse to lose game 1 because you chose not to use him when you had a chance to do so and get the win.
