And the fact that both were heralded as all world athletes that could "pick their position" by the recruiting services and both seem to be guys that don't really have one they can play effectively

You are confused.

There’s really no comp between Stevens and Ryan outside of Stevens finding his spot.
That’s exactly what we’re comparing here.
Obviously, Stevens is a much bigger guy than Ryan. I was just talking about the fact that he wasn’t an instant stud, and it took some time to find his spot.

This. I don’t take damn thing these idiots say about an athlete seriously.

Maybe you are thinking of Craig Loston - 5* saftety that didn't become a starter until his RS Junior season.

I still tend to think Sage would be a better free, although I am not sure they have really explored it

I wasn’t impress in spring game but those usually don’t mean much.

So of course Ryan can improve, and we all hope he does. But what I think people are saying is that he hasn't shown much thus far, so the odds are that he won't.

Five star players are supposed to be guys who make an immediate positive impact out of high school, especially in the DB positions. This has not been the case with Sage.

Grant Delpit started the season opener against BYU as a true freshman….

Yep. And constantly asked to play nickel, which he doesn’t appear to cover opponents naturally. Tight hips.
People in this thread saying he’s too small, maybe, or he’s too slow, which he’s not.
Last year he made several open field tackles. Extremely impressive stuff.
He missed an open field tackle in the spring game, but I think the tools are there for him to be a very solid safety.
All American? No. But very sound.

Punk, I don’t need to work. Played my cards right and retired at 59. I’ll meet your punk arse at sonic and drown you in a Red Bull art 44.
I think Sage will be just fine this year.

Some players it's hard to find a position for
For example Derrick Davis, great athlete but never could find his best position
Same thing with Ryan - great athlete
Marcel Brooks who left for TCU

He played at a small 2A (at the time) school against inferior competition. He doesn't have elite speed, quickness, or size. It was a disservice to have him rated as a 5 star player and he would've been better served with a mid 4 star rating. That said, even having to deal with injuries early in his career, he is rounding into a solid player who will hopefully contribute more this season.

I think he is closer than a lot of people realize.
He is often right where he needs to be. He just needs to start getting his head around to make a play on the ball.
There were a few games Sage looked to have very tight coverage, but lost the fight for the 50/50 balls. Physicality and size worked against him. He did have plays where he got turned around as well, but maybe more time in S&C and in Houses' D will help him turn the corner.

Yeah, insanity . . . or, you know, practice and training and experience.
It always makes me chuckle when people post that line in a sports conversation. I mean, doing the same thing and getting a different result is 100% the point of practice and training and experience, which are the essentials of getting better at sports.

I have been disappointed so far, but I have heard no reports suggesting he isn't a team player, will not work in the off season or that he is threatening to transfer to Alabama, so I am still hoping he turns the corner and becomes a star.

Who knows. He was overrated coming out of HS though. Most people who followed recruiting knew that before he even stepped foot on campus. Maybe he should stop worrying about talking shite like he did in the Purdue game and work harder. Same guy he talked shite to made him look like burnt toast until he dropped that ball and got hurt.

quote:and it makes me chuckle when fans think practice will turn a 3* into a 5*. Now sure, it does happen where a guy blossoms late in his career. But, although practice and hard work will surely make a guy better, it rarely turns a good player into a great player. If it did, then every average player that worked really hard would be an All-American.

90% of it is God-given talent. The rest is hard work.
