Saban's return to the SEC in 2007

This has been referenced time and time again, and for good reason. Saban's 2007 season at Alabama was his first back in the SEC from the NFL and he was thought to be one of the most elite coaches in football even at that time due to what he accomplished at LSU.
He finished that year 7-6.
Their schedule was as follows:
Western Carolina - W 52-6
at Vanderbilt - W 24-10
Arkansas - W 41-38
Georgia - L 23-26
Florida State in Jacksonville - L 14-21
Houston - W 30-24
at Ole Miss - W 27-24
Tennessee - W 41-17
LSU - L 34-41
Mississippi State - L 12-17
ULM - L 14-21
at Auburn - L 10-17
Colorado bowl game - W 30-24
I'm not sure what's more surprising - the fact that they lost 6 games that year or the fact that 4 of them came during a 4 game losing streak at the end of the regular season. They lost every single game in November that year.
Everyone needs to settle the frick down regarding LSU and Kiffin this year.
Yes, Blake Baker has always been overrated but it was important to keep him this year with all the changes taking place because he represented some sort of continuity for the team. He does need to go at the end of this year, though, unless he can start proving he can stop offenses in big games.
Yes, it's disappointing to see LSU with two losses before November even starts, considering the NIL investment in this year's team. The fact that both of those losses came in games that should have been won had it not been for Baker's questionable decisions makes this sting more.
Yes, Kiffin should have gone for it on that 4th and 1.
No, Kiffin is not a bad coach and no, he was not a bad hire for LSU. Everyone insinuating this needs to stop.
I think Kiffin will absolutely turn this around. I always assumed 3 regular season losses this year and although I'm getting nervous that we may have 4, it's definitely still possible to finish the regular season with 3 losses.
3 losses in Kiffin's first year at LSU is not unacceptable in my opinion.
The sky is not falling.

Nick Saban's first year at Alabama has absolutely, positively nothing whatsoever in common with Lane Kiffin's first year at LSU.
If you want to rationalize Kiffin's current failures, there are other ways to do it. This isn’t it. Not even close.

Yeah. Nick Saban did a really bad job signing players out of the transfer portal that year.
Any comparison prior to 2020 are totally irrelevant. The game has experienced its biggest change in structure since maybe the adoption of the forward pass. I can assure you, if the transfer and NIL rules were applicable in 2007 Saban would not have gone 6-6. NOT EVEN CLOSE!

This is Apples and Oranges.
There was no tranfer portal but you had to rebuild your program through recruits. Well you are destined to be lacking in talent until year 2 or 3 even.
Currently you can go find missing pieces and get them into your program without having to focus on HS recruits to develop by sophmore year. A transfer had to sit a year at that time.
Now there is no doubt, new players in a new sytem takes time and should improve throughout the year. But with the money spent on top players to come here, 6-6 is not acceptable.

How about 4? Or 5? Because it is highly likely that LSU finishes either 8-4 or 7-5. Frankly, 6-6 is more likely than 9-3 (although I think neither are nearly as likely as 8-4 or 7-5.)

Understanding one simple fact can help you put into context the retardation on this board. Most people can not think beyond one variable at a time. Throw out a word like multivariate analysis and most people on here think you are speaking another language.
At some point, people bought the reductionistic take that money spent on NIL should directly correlate with success. If that were true then the Georgia’s, Ohio State’s, Texas, Texas AM, Miami, and Oregons of the world would never lose.
There are ALOT more factors that go into running an organization as big as LSU. It’s not your daughter’s lemonade stand. Hiring coaches, putting systems in place, evaluating current roster, fund raising, and many other factors go into running an organization as big as LSU.
ANYONE who sums it up as “LSU big NIL, UK little NIL so we should win” is showing themselves to be the little brain person that they are.
If our team isn’t better next year and then seriously competitive in year 3 then the critiques start being valid.
Until then, I’m gonna support the guy that we are stuck with for the foreseeable future.

Multivariate analysis and reductionism in the same post? Woah take it easy big brains, you know so many big words and have demonstrated your intellectual superiority to the tiger rant.

I’d dumb it down for you but I’m not even sure that would work to get the point across. Also, one of the best parts of being a retard is you get to live in your ignorance. That can be nice and I wouldn’t want to take that away from you.

Can you even rationalize how bad LSU was before Kiffin was hired? LSU had no QB, ok RB's, no WR's, no OL, no DL, 1 LB, and a good secondary. Brian Kelly had LSU in a pretty bad spot. I think the other poster was using Nick Saban's bad first year at Bama as a comparison to LSU's start under year 1 of Kiffin.
But I guess you are going to be stupid and assume that LSU was 100% fixed because they spent 50+ million in the transfer portal. Taking out any facts like the QB they paid for was coming off a major injury, every player learning a new system and how to play together, some players not panning out as quickly as others.
Or how about the fact that the SEC is hard.

Comparing pre NIL Saban 20 years ago and Kiffin today is a really dumb analogy.

Haven’t your heard? They only lost those games because he benched so many of his best players while trying to build a winning culture

If Nick saban had 48million to buy players they would have won the natty the first year

Yup. Wouldn't be surprised if this happens.
Good thing about that though - wholesale changes would be made.

It is wild they scored 34 on us but only 14 on ULM and 12 on Moo State
