As long as there is pending litigation, LSU will not make many if any, public statements regarding the Brooks family or do anything like "cutting ties". They will also have instructed anyone who works for LSU not to have contact with the family except in the presence of LSU's lawyers. Once a settlement is reached, all bets are off other than any stipulations reached as part of the agreement.
