re: Russell Shepard...either never got the right chance or was just not what he seemed to be?

Almost a ten yr NFL career and over 9.5 million in the NFL, and he couldn't help Les. He did it in spite of Les.
Wow!
But let's be honest - Shep wasn't good at LSU. And as much as I dislike Les, he gave Shep plenty of chances.
Shep had stone hands here, went down at first contact, and had no wiggle (although he did have straight-line speed).
He was a good athlete, just not a good player here. I guess he was able to find his niche in the NFL.

If he played for a coach like Kiffin, freeze, urban, etc he would had a very nice little college career.
He went to quite possibly the worst head coach for him
And those saying “he only was an nfl special teams player for 8 years”, you need to look up the average college career for those types of players. They are usually very productive college position players

He averaged around 10 YPC and we just stopped using him.
he averaged fewer than 7 yards per carry over his career. His season high was 8.1 ypc in 2012. 2012 also happened to be the year where Beckham and Landry established themselves as elite receivers, thus leaving him with fewer opportunities.

I was fired up to see him pull some percy harvey shite against UF in 2009 as a frosh. That game was hyped. Zero touches

What does that tell you about their faith in Shepard being able to throw an accurate forward pass.
But what I don't understand is if Shepard was not a good thrower how did they not realize this when they recruited him? Was he just not developed or was he just all fools gold? I have to believe if he went to another school in a better system he wouldn't' be as bad as we think.

We had like 150 yards of offense that game. A freshman Russell Shepard wasn't doing anything against that defense. Honestly, outside a long run against Auburn, freshman Russell Shepard didn't do much against anyone his freshman year. He had a good start to the 2010 season, then his production went way down and his touches decreased as the season went on. His biggest problems were he didn't make many guys miss and went down too easily. He had to be in space with wide open running lanes to be effective. Look at his biggest running plays of his career. He made one cut and ran to daylight without being touched. Guys like Percy Harvin, who our fans seem to think he could have been, didn't have those weaknesses

I think they did, but Les promising he'd be given a shot at QB was the only way to sign him. We star-chased quite a bit and he was the #1 recruit in the country in his class

Miles didn’t know how to use him. If he couldn’t run between the tackles Miles didn’t know what to do with him.

He was an elite athlete who did not have the arm to be a top notch quarterback. Everyone on the recruiting trail told him this except for Les Miles.

Yes....a 9 million dollar niche!

Just like their plan to put Chase at db.

I don’t think we will ever know really. I do believe if he had been in one of those offenses with his type of qb skills/movement and the offense centered on that for multiple years he would have been really nasty to stop.
I think Daniels mobility is better because of his vision, ability to slip the tackle, etc.

Miles couldn't identify or use a dual threat QB. Or any QB for that matter.

Miles was an Idiot. Think about the 2011 NCG and the number of guys on offense who were on the team and did not play quality time. On a night that your offense looked like Dog shite. OBJ, Landy, Mettenburger. With a month to prepare.

If those are the 2 choices, its the latter.
I think highly of Russell and think he should have a special place somewhere in the facility about perseverance, handling adversity and never giving up. He's a true Tiger.

As someone who was lucky enough to attend many practices during his time, I can say there was a reason he never threw a pass in games.
They had plays for him that were practiced and they never went well, his arm was weak and inaccurate so everything had to go perfect on those trick plays for it to have any chance at success. It wasn’t worth it.
Shep actually took it really well, worked his arse off to learn the WR position and ended up being an asset to LSU and in the NFL.
His athletic style was a bit ahead of his time and wasn’t made for an old school offense like Les’ but he still made it work.

You will find your answer when you understand Les Miles is in that equation

Great athlete and even greater person. Miles is an idiot

Had ‘The Yips’ at LSU. Put that kid in every position and situation to succeed.
So happy he was able to have a great NFL career.
