this

They basically took our worst offensive player and made the entire offense run through him (70% of BCSNCG either JJ run or JJ pass) meanwhile we have sick as athletes like Shep who come here and have their career killed by our O.

I love Shep, but if he thinks he is getting drafted or on an NFL roster as a free agent, he is delusional. What position would he possibly play and who would possibly draft him?

You all are looking at this the wrong way. It has very little to do with Shephard's draft stock or whether staying would improve it. Rather, it has everything to do with a guy who is very frustrated, rightfully so, at the way he has been used over the last 3 years. To top it off, he had to sit through an atrocious offensive output on national television.

Some of you need to put yourselves in Shepard's shoes. Do you want to go out and try on your own to make an NFL roster, or do you want to come back and be wasted with Miles at the helm?

if we changed offenses? sure

but in this offense? no way

The overreaction is humorous.

Yes, it is possible for WRs to be developed and drafted high in this offense.

It may be possible for receivers to be developed and drafted high in this offense, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Russell Shepard. The guy had 14 receptions and 7 carries in 11 games this year. For whatever reason(s), he's not used very much.

play calling and QB play.

cant do much when your QB throws for 30 or 50yds a game.

This, and I think Shep would be a late round project on speed and running ability alone. Just imagine what the Saints could do with him...

i don't. not with miles
Someone posted numbers yesterday showing run/pass ratio, and with the right QBs the offense has thrown the ball at a good clip.

The QB play the last four years has been incredibly bad. We've been trapped in the false comparison of JL versus JJ, when in fact they were both so bad that it affected the entire offense (and therefore the entire team) for their careers.

After all, Miles is the guy who OK'd Flynn to Byrd with seconds left on the clock. I have to think that the play calling will be more appropriate for someone with Mett's talents.

That might not mean much for RS and his strengths, but I expect LSU to be much more balanced next year. A QB like Mett or Kiel can make good receivers, but good WRs don't necessarily help bad QBs.

Russell Shepherd has been a disapointment throughout his LSU career. He won't go very high in NFL draft & won't be missed at LSU.

I really can't believe that since he's been on campus we've been stuck with JJ at QB and Shep hasn't been given a shot at all. The top rated option QB coming out of HS can't run this basic offense? JJ can't make a read to save his life, and Shep can't get even a sniff at it?

I would love to have been able to see what he could have been at another school, because his eligibility was wasted at LSU

I truly believe under the proper tutelage Shep would have been a very good QB here. JJ would have been a very good WR. Possibly played at the next level at that position

I agree with the notion that both of our senior QBs have been so bad, they've totally changed the offense. I've seen Mett in practice and scrimmages and he did appear to be a far superior passer compared to his senior counterparts to my untrained/non-professional eye, but I keep reverting to one question over and over: If he really is as good as we all seem to think he is, why didn't he play this year?

It was his third year in college and we were running a new system that would have negated the "familiarity with the system" advantage. Was this ultra-talented savior of the program really unable to beat out the 2 worst LSU QBs since Jamie Howard? I just have this fear deep down that this alleged mass exodus of receivers is just another potential signal of a possibility that none of us want to consider re Mett.

I mean could Miles really have been so stubborn/loyal to his senior QBs at the expense of thd rest of the team that he buried the best QB with the best chance to win on the bench at the 3 spot in the depth chart? I'm just terrified that we could see Mett next year and think, "we should have known."

This is not necessarily what I think, let's just say it's a faint voice that exists at the edge of my frazzled psyche after that butt-raping on Monday that is now less-equipped to stave off pessimism.

That's the next question.

I think you hit the nail on the head. He's loyal to his seniors, knew he had outstanding defense and specials teams, and as the season wore on he became more and more convinced (with good reason) that he could play ultra-conservative with two mediocre QBs on offense, and still achieve his goals.

Problem is, Miles never considered a Plan C if JJ or JL couldn't get it done. He never took the opportunity to develop Mettenberger in case he was needed, and there were plenty of opportunities to do that. And the BCS game pointed was the reckoning for this philosophy. Miles believed in the status quo, and that it would carry the team through to the end. This probably would have worked against any other coach except Saban and this Alabama team.

Shep can't be serious, he didnt produce enough yet to even get a look from the NFL IMO.

He's hoping to get drafted based on his measurables. He actually has pretty good size (6'1) for a WR and speed (Timed at 4.38) and supposedly a very impressive vertical leap and broad jump. I'm guessing he would probably pretty do well in interviews and on the Wonderlic. NFL people will look at his production and attribute it to LSU's offensive system. Hell, Mark Duper caught 24 passes in his college career but the Dolphins spent a 2nd round pick on him...and he ended up going to 3 Pro Bowls. Wes Welker caught 259 and shared the NCAA record for career punt return TD's. He went undrafted. Would that have happened ih he wasn't 5'9 and ran a 4.65?

All RS needs to do is show scouts at the combine and pro day that he can catch the football. That is what has kept him off the field at LSU.

I wonder if someone besides Bobby Hebert was mad and went on a rant about Lee not getting in the game?
