Crews and Skenes need to use all that leverage to get best deals possible
Amazing insight.

This.

The Pirates have, in the past, taken the approach of not always wanting to pay slot value at the top so they can spread the pool money around and sign more good prospects. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them take Langford at #1...even if they have Crews and Skenes rated as higher prospects.

The baseball draft doesn't operate like the NFL and NBA drafts

I've seen buzz around the HS kid Max Clark lately.
Max is legit, don’t get me wrong. But imagine being a Pirates fan and them taking a high school kid over Crews, Skenes, and Langford.

You don’t have to sign and go back to college. The other thing is if a team doesn’t sign there number 1 the whole draft class is screwed.

Feel like Detroit would be the team for Crews to get to the Bigs the fastest.

Pirates might draft a HS kid to save $$$.

I mean, if I'm a Pirates fan that follows the draft, I'm going to look at the cumulative draft haul over one specific guy because that's why you would take Clark instead of Crews, to improve the overall haul.

Went to Pittsburg a few months ago. I don't blame him.

As a Pirates fan, I would like him to go there. But also, as a Pirates fan, I understand the Pirates will never, ever make a real run. They are 6 games behind .500 now and it is a miracle. Not being last in your division is the goal there.

A $1m-$2m haircut as the #1 pick is more than what the otherwise #3-5 guys would get if they were drafted #3-5. Plus, Pirates have a history of taking the Louisville catcher a couple years ago #1 and saving $2m on the slot bonus that was used in later rounds.
I also understand the Nats don't play such games and pay at least slot if not more. Could be a case where Crews gets more bonus as the #2 pick than Lankford or one of the high school OF's gets #1.

You clearly didn't go to the baseball stadium.

Really though, if you went to Pittsburgh and didn't have a good time you need to look inward.

Pirates gave Cole $8M in 2011; they’ll pay if need to

Does he want to go back to school and take on more personal risk, delay MLB free agency by a year and hope to get what would amount to less than $1 million more -- and maybe get less -- just on principle?

I lived in Pittsburgh for 7 years. It’s a fine city to live in but not a vacation destination by any means. The stadium is great but without a guide it would be a tough city to have fun in.

This has nothing to do with how the draft is handled.

Why do people keep repeating this like it bears any relevance?

To be fair, the MLB draft is pretty unique in its format. You’re talking to the rant, many of whom would rather talk about Jell-O shots than baseball.

MLB draft is so odd sometimes. People really will pass on generational talents to save a few bucks

They do this and then pay guaranteed contracts for 10+ years to middle aged players who won’t do shite in the back half of a contract. For as successful as these owners are, sometimes the decisions are flat out bone-headed

Yeah I get it, but would you rather have 3 lottery tickets on future MLB starters or a near certain All-Star for multiple years.

I just feel like any high schoolers potential is Crews, Langford, or Skenes. There’s no guarantee they get there, when those 3 are certainties.

Now I will admit my entire opinion is based on the Finals series but I don't thin Wyatt Langford is all that much of a step down from Crews. Don't get me wrong, I think Crews is the better player but I think its like the difference between Bregman and Dansby Swanson. Both are big Leaguers that will have long careers.
