I think there were 2 from Louisville area he “signed”.
Gus Rudolph a few years later. Gus was fouled just before the buzzer in a game against Ole Miss and sank both free throws in a 52-51 Tiger victory.

Kenny Higgs was from Owensboro, down the road from Louisville (a little)

I remember listening to that Ole Miss game on 1150am WJBO in BR. They also aired all the Astro and NO Jazz games.
Rudolph didn't play much, but was in the game late for whatever reason, and sunk those FTs to win it.
That's almost FIFTY years ago. Wow!

I'm 99.999999% sure the WORST play by play man in college basketball (and football for that matter) history (Hawthorne) was doing that game.
I still remember him hyperventilating at the end and during the post game show of that broadcast.
My memory from that long ago can be shaky, however.

I have a program with him on it, signed
Most of the team signed it. I mention it in my book. My friend, Derrick Mallet got it for me, he was a ball boy at the time. I was in 7th grade.

Absolutely the most underrated player in LSU basketball history.
Still to this day the all-time LSU assist leader whether you go by total or per game and 7th all time scorer in LSU history.

One of many great talents who played for Dale and Ron. He was a star at Dallas Carter High School, along with Vernon Smith, who played at A&M.
The Astronaut--question one of those highly ranked recruits who did not reach his potential was Mickey Heard. Was he recruited by Ron Abernathy?

I'm from Humboldt Tn where coach Abernathy coached our high school boys basketball team for the past 12 years....He was a great coach and even a better person. He had just announced his retirement back in March....Below is a fine tribute from the local sports journalist.
