Yes, the Astronaut was my all-time favorite LSU MBB player.

6’9” & could jump out of the building, but also able to handle the ball.

Whether it was his hammer dunks or that sweet jumper from the foul line extended, the Deaf Dome would just erupt after either.

Scales.was by far my favorite player as a REALLY young Tigah.

However, Chris Jackson came along and took that spot for me. I can't possibly imagine CJ will ever be replaced as my favorite. But it would be nice if that could happen.

“I didn’t like John Brady at first,” Brown said just recently. “But I grew to admire and
respect him as a coach and a man. He did a wonderful job with his Final Four team and
really should’ve got to coach longer. I’m proud of him.”

Brady went to great lengths to re-hab his image with anyone and everyone involved with LSU including Dale and did a really good job of it.

Outside of Johnny Jones, Dale pretty much fell out with every coach at LSU that came after him, we can debate the why and put the blame wherever we choose but that's fact.

Brady had pretty much burned bridges with everyone involved with LSU hoops by the end and it was totally on him, but he really humbled himself and made a concerted effort to rebuild to the extent that he is pretty beloved now as the radio color person for us. Really remarkable IMHO and all credit to him.

RIP, Coach Abernathy. Can still see him on the sidelines coaching up Johnny Jones, Hi C and Stefan Johnson.

No. It was Ron, and I'm pretty sure it was 50k, and it was meant to pay for John Williams out of Los Angeles (#1 recruit in the country and VASTLY underrated player in Tiger history).

I'm pretty sure I'm right about this, but some other poster may have a better recollection than I do

You are mixing stories. Dale Brown related the story that John Williams was being offered large amounts of money to sign with other programs. So Dale went to visit Big John and his momma and he claims he opened a suitcase with $50,000 and told John if he accepted the offers he was like a piece of cattle ( or some Daleism). Dale claims John and momma were so taken with his pitch that John signed with LSU and no money changed hands.

You're right. I remember that now. But I also remember this about that story since you jarred my memory.

Dale laid a $1 bill on top of that $50k before he told John he'd just be another piece of cattle, signifying LSU is now the top bidder for him.

By the way, I think there is ZERO CHANCE John Williams wasn't paid a huge sum of cash to come play for LSU. Dale had his way of embellishing his stories.

Williams got paid in college. It was 300K he was offered to play.

Don’t be fooled by people that don’t know what really happened during that late 70’s early 80’s run.. His mentor was a bookie too. Let’s not forget that.

ZERO doubt Williams and 99.9% of the blue chippers got paid illegally for decades across the country.

We do have a moron or three that post on the rant that believe otherwise, however.

Not quite sure of the point you're trying to make. Perhaps try again in Engrish?

There were checks being cashed that were picked up on Fridays taken straight to the bank where the only work was driving in a truck and picking up the checks.

No doubt. A lot of schools had that. Minimal to no work for a decent or better paycheck.

That's why I always smirk about how these poor athletes were "exploited" for years.

The producers were getting 6 figures under the table for years at every school that was winning big. And even ones that weren't.

He had made the mistake of criticizing the lack of funding for his program and compared it to the football program. Guess the Supper Club wasn't open back then.

Yep, I remember the story of Abernathy sleeping in his car in front of Macklin’s house to recruit & sign him

Wrong. Abernathy was Macklin's high school coach. Dale added him to the staff the swame year he signd Macklin. The NCAA later outlawed this practice, but its probably legal again under today's rules.
