You're exactly right. The only way to be a part of it was to be there. Every game wasn't on TV, and as cool as it was to sit and listen to WJBO, it wasn't the same as being there, so when you were there you made the best of it.

Recall a story from the 2012 South Carolina game in which a Gamecock receiver said he couldn't make out the plays signalled in from the sideline because his eyeballs were vibrating from the noise.

I actually don’t want us rocking buses or scaring people with the tiger. We’re good enough to beat them up where it matters. On the field.

I was a kid and I was at that game. I’ve attended many games in TS, but I have never attended a game like that game. Remember, at that time LSU wasn’t on TV every week. USC was #1 and was thought to be one of the finest teams ever assembled. TS wasn’t as big as it is today. However, I would suggest that more LSU fans back then were more rabid in their love for LSU than what we see today. That game was absolutely nuts in how loud and electric it was. LSU had that game except for a bull shite penalty.

1979 USC players after they were gifted a win in TS. I don't ever want to come and play here again. They had never seen anything like it. They knew they got lucky.
Who on here was in Tiger Stadium that epic night?

I was in the stands and on the field. (GBFTL "Pre-Game" Bass Drummer in 79 and 5 additional seasons as well)

That USC game, we were driving across the Basin from Lafayette & passed car after car with hand held signs out the window, looking for tickets. Never saw that before or since. That was TS at its absolute best. That USC team had 7 NFL HOF'ers on it.

I also was at '79 USC game in student section. Loudest sporting event I have ever been to. The crowd was electric from start to finish. Back then the only place you could let out your passion and feelings was AT the games. So few games on TV. No TD boards to vent on. No social media. So everything built up in you alone for a week and when you got to TS you just exploded! Absolutely drained emotionally after that game. Didn't say 3 words to my date during or after the game. Football heaven (except for the hellacious ending).

From an article on the 1979 game against USC:

"It's probably the only time in my life I was intimidated by the crowd." - Former All American and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Ronnie Lott. "A lot of great players have played in that stadium, but I don't know if any team has walked into that stadium and dealt with what we went through. From the time we landed to the time we left, I don't know if a team has ever gone through that. I haven't been in an event like that at any level of football. Out of all the games I've ever played in, I've never been in anything like that, and I am including my Super Bowls in that assessment."
