Rewatched the game already

One of the “perks” of having young kids is I can no longer sleep past sunrise


For anyone interested in putting themselves through the same, you can go ahead and skip through the first 20 minutes or so.

Clearly the intensity and emotion of the game was overwhelming and disrupted what we were trying to do on offense.

On the first three offensive drives we couldn’t communicate at all, which was to be expected. No running lanes or time to throw against an aggressive defense that clearly knows this offense very well. I expected to see more scheming to get guys running open but their secondary was sitting all over our receivers and OL wasn’t giving time to let anything develop. I think the OM staff and players familiarity with Lane’s designs hasn’t been talked about enough. Don’t think there is another defense on our schedule that will be as comfortable against what we try do than they will, obviously, and I think that familiarity was most obvious at the beginning of the halves.

Two three and outs to start the game and another to start the second half when they’ve just been coached up gave Chambliss the breathing room he needed to do what he does and make plays, mostly on 3rd downs.

Baker’s defense did pretty much exactly what they did last year against him, but he was absolutely unstoppable on 3rd downs. The Mahomes flip probably was the difference in the game when you see how it played out. Thats just a TRO protected sixth year multi millionaire play, as was the TD run. No question that he earned every one of those millions because he won the game pretty much single handedly on those plays.


It will be interesting to see as we go forward how much the OL struggles had to do with the crowd and the defense knowing our offense so well. We were able to get some good looks after those first three drives, and the TD pass to Watkins was clearly Lane recognizing something the defense was giving us, because he ran the same play back to back.

For all the talk about Leavitt’s limitations as a passer, you won’t see a better throw than that drone strike right over great coverage. Would have loved to see more attacking downfield like that but again there just wasn’t a lot of time to let a lot of our routes develop.

That play also showed that our receivers just haven’t been great at creating separation. That corner was all over him but Sam just made an absolutely perfect throw and it was a great clutch catch to beat great coverage.


I imagine we will see much better days, but that was a playoff team we played last night in about the toughest environment any of those players or coaches will likely ever see.

Both teams better get over that game quickly because next week could be trouble for both teams if they get hung up this one.

Jones has been such a good addition btw, but not sure why Gage continues to get touches over Berry or Durham when he needs a breather. Will be interesting to see how backfield touches develop going forward.
