The numbers are fine if the only expectation is leadership quality, but using those numbers to highlight playmakers adds unnecessary stress.

It started ten years ago and was basically just a copy of the #18 thing.

It's not really a tradition.

When you “anoint” a player to wear a number, they just go on a long list of names that wore it, thus diminishing its significance.

This is why I really hope Stingley keeps 24. If he has a great junior season like we all hope, any time the fans think of #24 they’d think of Stingley.

When you think of the #7, you think of......I don’t know, lots of people. It waters it down and makes it less special.

I can’t stand this “tradition.” If it’s really something the players love, then fine—let them keep doing it. Just my opinion.

I have no problem with the #18 tradition. It exemplifies leadership and character on and off the field. It should go back to being just one player though. When O did that, it watered it down a bit. The #7 tradition mostly came about due to Ali Highsmith and Patrick Peterson being great on the field that they decided to pass that # down to the best defensive player and eventually it went to the best player. I mean if the players care about it then that's all that matters. That's the least of my worries when it comes to this team.

This has never been said by any of the players that you claim love this “tradition.” This was made up by you and a few other fans.

Reason #7462 it should be discontinued.

Where did I claim the players love this tradition?

Peterson, Mathieu, Delpit, Stevens - all except PP changed to #7 once it became available. Kind of seems like something the DB's covet but I'm sure you're right.

ps - Quite pissy this morning aren't you?

Just FYI, the players pick #18, not the coaches.

I don't want it retired, but I'd for it to not be so watered down. Stevens was not the caliber player that should get 7. It should be reserved for guys like Stingley, Chase, Ricks, and Burrow. 18 selections have been good other than Damone, but I don't wanna see 2 18's every year.

Chris curry was an awesome example of 18.

He sure was. His locker room contributions can’t be measured.

It puts too much pressure on the players with those numbers, let they keep their old number and make us proud of that number.

There is no official #7 tradition. That is a player thing. Even Giles couldnt break that one...

18 was awesome until we started giving out 2 of them. That’s retarded.

The tradition doesn’t really matter so there’s no reason to retire it. It’s just not that big of a deal

We should put it on pause.

But we should also not give those numbers out in the meantime.

You cant go back to them not being special.

Tell Brennan he gets #18 and Stingley he gets #7 if/when they come back for 2021. Problem solved.
