I would compare Archer more to Dennis Allen - an excellent defensive coordinator who was in over his head as head coach.
Archer was not a bad coach, just did not recruit. Being a head coach at a top-level D1 school involves much more than coaching.

I will agree with this. Archer did well with Arnsparger's players in '87 and '88. Hallman was an awful coach and did not have anything to work with when he got the job. He actually recruited very well, getting the #1 class in 1992. He had a very talented team in '94 but showed how awful of a coach he actually was. The team was 2-7 when Hallman got fired. After his firing was announced, the team blew out Tulane and Arkansas on the road to finish 4-7.

There’s a reason that Mike Archer is still in football and has been (both college and professional levels) since he left LSU and the only notable coaching job Curley got after LSU was a high school gig for a few years.

Was that the year he signed like 4 stud RBs? Jermaine Sharpe, Kevin Franklin?, Jay Johnson (?), and somebody else?

O did successfully recruit Burrow, etc., and hire Brady, otherwise no greatest season in the history of college football, so he did something. Peyton never going to LSU.

What year was the racial issues w/ LSU and the football team and NAACP.
I remember the presser they held and Archer was freaking fuming mad. He was so mad his face was redhot and he wore that pissed off look on his face. I know after that he was shite, maybe it was his last year, I don't remember, but whatever those racial tensions were really sucked the life out of football for a while.

quote:The media storm around assistant coaches/coordinators was not the same back then as it is now. But Archer was a hot commodity when he got the LSU job. The anticipation was he would get a HC job soon at a smaller school and be at a major after doing well there, not LSU as quickly as he did. I honestly think that would have been a better scenario for Archer. Smaller school to learn the ropes, basically. I think his LSU experience soured him on being a college HC.

Curly was a huge loser. He did not have a process or alignment. He never acted like or spoke like a winner, even in front of alumni. Sometimes he didn't act like the head coach as if winning games was someone else's responsibility.

Re Tardo? You can thank Dinardo for the resurgence of LSU football. Stubborn maybe retardo No.

The jewel was Robert Davis…..insanely talented.
Germaine (Juice) was another class and he was the top RB in LA out of Ascension Catholic

I thought that was his name, but didn’t want to whiff on it. I was a big Sharpe fan having watched him dominate at OCS. I thought he’d have a better career. Oh well.

Another forgotten talent was Derrick Beavers. Smallish but quick and strong. Awesome guy too.

He was a huge letdown, really thought he might turn it around. Instead, it was a huge fiasco.

I remember they played a great first half against #1 ranked Florida St who had been destroying everyone before losing 27-16 …That was a bummer- but they played hard. Fool’s Gold about Curley’s tenure, sadly….

Had the Catholic High trio of Jesse Daigle, Scott Ray and Leo Abel.
