I ain't smart enough to know. But I do know several friends of mine who played at LSU when Bill Arsparger was the coach.
They all said he had them well prepared pre-game, and in-game, he knew what the other team was going to do almost in the way they lined up and acted in the huddle and coming out of the huddle.

Hal Hunter……….
Cmon baws, dude has a perfect 1.000 winning percentage!!! Dude it’s hard to argue against someone who never lost a game his ENTIRE TIME as coach. Ole baw must have made some solid in game coaching decisions to post that perfect no loss (not even a tie) record right? Dude was the best ever to walk the sidelines at Tiger Stadium. However just like the second best football coach Saban the NFL came calling. Unlike Mr. Saban who failed in the league Coach Hunter is still there today, that right there say’s enough for me!!!!!!!

I totally agree that he is a great coach in terms of getting a team prepared, but his in-game coaching is not one of his strong points.
Living in Alabama, even most Alabama fans say the same thing. Just goes to show how pregame prep - and that includes the mental part also - is so important to winning.

Lou Tepper, hands down. shite, he wrote the book on line backing and managed to have all of them out of place all the time.

It’s not Saban. He is a good but not elite game day coach. He is elite in getting to game day.
What Saban excels over everyone is in building, managing and maintaining a program.

Skip. I’ll mention Mulkey after she wins her next title.

quote:Pat Henry Henry is obviously the best LSU coach, and probably one of the best in NCAA history. But this thread is about gameday coaches. There isn’t much game day coaching going on in track and field unless you’re coaching the jumps (which he did not). His skill was having everyone fully prepared then letting them do their thing when it was time to compete
Lololol. Not only did he have to do it over a single day, he did it FOUR straight days to win all of those championships.
Nobody was ever as good as Pat on “game day”.

He is a good gameday coach, he’s just so elite at the other things that his Gameday coaching pales in comparison.

I played for Mac and worked for Stovall and Arnspager…Coach Arnspager was near savant like in his knowledge of football…every facet of the game. Scary smart…

Please explain how a track coach can be a great "GameDay coach".
Outside of yelling "run faster!", what can he do?

That was on Aranda and his crap those last 2 TDs. So people who said Aranda was a great Game Day coach look no further than Texas and Bama that year. I will say he didn’t have all his team for both of those games. TAMU on was dominating defensively
