Nine years ago, Ed Orgeron wanted to fight me. Three men and eight feet stood between us, and Orgeron, a former Division I defensive lineman who even today is considered the toughest coach in college football, wanted to close that distance in a hot second.

I was 24 years old, eight months into my first full-time job, wearing a Dillard’s sport coat two sizes too big and extending a business card at a man who was calling me a "motherfricker" and being escorted away in anger.

(I have no idea what the business card would’ve accomplished. It felt like the right move at the time.)

The staff’s new athletic director for football external affairs, a former high school coach named Hugh Freeze, tried to calm Orgeron.

"Uh Coach, this is the reporter that …" Freeze started.

"frick THAT MOTHERfrickER."

"Coach, I’m …" were the only words I managed. Orgeron walked down a hallway and through a staff-only entrance to the football offices.

Freeze made one last attempt. Orgeron swung and faced me.

"frick! WE ARE NOT GONNA LET THIS PROGRAM BE SABOTAGED!"

quote:

Years later, an Orgeron colleague from their University of Miami days told me that he once had to pick up "Bebe" (Orgeron's nickname) from police custody after a night out. He said he was told by law enforcement officials seasoned in evaluating violence that Orgeron's bar fight opponent looked dead.

"The cops thought Bebe had killed the other guy. That was Bebe. He was wild."

There were dark moments for Orgeron. In 1991, a woman in Dade County, Florida, was granted a restraining order against Orgeron after accusing him of repeated violence. The woman received a permanent injunction prohibiting Orgeron from going to her home or workplace, and the injunction ended in July 1992, according to the AP in 2004.

quote:

Orgeron also was arrested in a 1992 incident in which he reportedly head-butted the manager of a nightclub in Baton Rouge, according to news accounts at the time. The charges were eventually dropped when he reached a settlement with the victim, but the arrest damaged his career.

Has Coach O really changed? The man seems to still enjoy threatening people with violence. Even when he "jokes", it involves death.

He does not possess the ability to let things go or take the high road and it seems as if his immediate reaction always has something to do with violence.

He’s just a good ole baw, right? Is this what a “good ole baw” is? I’m not understanding what that means anymore.

It should come as no surprise that a known domestic abuser allowed domestic abuse to plague the program on his watch.

Ask yourself this, would Nick Saban ever let this situation that caused the caller to jump O happen? Would he ever respond in such an unprofessional way?

If O was winning an the program was doing great, this would have been laughed off with a statement. When you are doing this bad job and you then go do things like this to make it worse, people are going to pile on.

I suspect his now ex-wife helped keep him in check for a period up until last year. Last night was not bad, but he’s sort of on watch right now so should use better judgement. He’s a dead man walking, he just needs to finish with dignity if he wants another job.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasnt O a raging drunk back in the early 90's? That was 30 years ago and from what I understand he got his drinking and drugging under control.

Judge him all you want for his coaching, but pouring over every detail of his life seems like crossing the line to me. All of us have shite in our lives and none of us are perfect.

I am convinced if a tornado took out Tiger Stadium most of the posters on this board would blame O.

Dude I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been arrested. Much less for a violent crime. And I’ve definitely never threatened a woman. Have you?

Yeah just little details like beating someone nearly to death and domestic Violence against women. Just small things that are in the past and should be forgotten.

It’s been discussed for some time now that O has had a mean streak.

Expect it to get worse as the season progresses. He’s not gonna take the L’s very well. Might have to get fired for being arrested lol

One of O’s biggest problems was his drinking. He was a violent drunk and made really stupid decisions.

He’s also very physical and generally faces obstacles with physical rather than mental tools.

I know he quit drinking before he took the head coaching job at LSU and had by many accounts gotten his life in order.
I have heard that he started drinking again in the past few years but cannot confirm it. That could be part of his problem today.

Most people wanted to see the local boy do well and he did but it just doesn’t look like he’s handled success very well

Nobody cared about this in 2019. If it was water under the bridge in 2019 let it be that way now. Judge the man on current events
