Reflections from the Arkansas Series

PITCHING
- Paul Skenes is just an absolute stopper. Despite throwing a wrench into his preparation by moving the game up last minute, Skenes went out and muted a really, really strong offensive lineup. Skenes was great, but I think as the game went on and he was not getting the usual run support, he tried to be too perfect. He nibbled a little and it put him in a jam in the 6th, but he pitched right out of it.
- Griffin Herring & Garrett Edwards' emergence were a pleasant surprise. Could Edwards be a starter on the weekend? Sure, I think he could. However, I believe they will continue to work Hurd in that role. And I think Edwards is very comfortable coming out of the bullpen; I would not mess with it. The bullpen needs stability and Edwards has been the guy to bring it.
- I think Herring's appearance in G3 was vital in swinging the momentum in that game. He came in the 3rd inning and calmed the game down on. The sequence that followed; Pearson throwing the runner out at 2B, and Beloso 2out single vs LHP to tie the game really swung the game.
- Ty Floyd was brilliant in usual Ty Floyd fashion. Rough, self-inflicted 1st & 3rd innings, but he pitched around them as he usually does.
- The 1st & 3rd inning also proved to be laborious for Thatcher Hurd. HIs command has just been poor. It just looks like his release point is off to me, and that the ball is sticking in his hand; but he shows enough flashes that I think they will let him pitch through it. He just looks like a tweak off.
- Overall pitching thoughts; lot of people banging on the staff particularly the bullpen, but they pitched 26IP this weekend and had maybe 4 rough innings?
:Christian Little has been great starting innings, but has really struggled entering with inherited runners. Something to look at there. I still think he is fine, and they may just need to be more selective on how they use him.
:Shores was great in his appearance. Little eye opening they felt comfortable going to him in that spot. Some big time K's to get out of jams. He got an undeserved L in G1.
:Edwards already spoken of. He was great especially in G3. I think Johnson ran him a little hard with a 9R lead, but he might be the guy as we move forward. Everything is on a corner, and his offspeed is a complete hammer. Hat tip to Wes Johnson, as his velo is way up, and this is what has elevated him.
Bigger point, is ARK is a top 5 team, and if you could not see the discrepancy in pitching talent after G1, then you are blind. LSU simply out-classed them in the final 2 games. LSU has the arms for a deep, deep run. They will have to continue to figure out where they best fit.
HITTING
- I think the 8th Inning in G1 is where the game was lost for LSU. Neal's HR was a humongous spot and clutch for an 18yr old. But after that, they had runners on, and White and Morgan both pop out. This game was kind of like Sunday vs A&M, games LSU should have won. The margin of error vs these SEC teams will be slim. But the more i focus on the process, the less these results matter to me. LSU will make these games up. ARK pitched really well in G1, but I also think the time change hurt the flow of the game a bit.
-After the anomaly in GM1, Crews & White just continue to mash the ball. A combined 15 RBI on the weekend.
-Tre Morgan also had a great weekend, and was on his game at the plate. Pulled a HR up into the RF bleachers; Ball off the wall in CF; multiple hits served into LF. This is vintage Tre Morgan.
- as we move along, you look for guys that will emerge for you to continue to build your roster with. And it just seems like Jobert and Cade Beloso are moving in separate directions. Is Jobert doing enough at the plate to continue to start? I do not think. Furthermore, he is a liability in the field. If he is not hitting, then not sure what you have there.
:I think you have to continue to probe and see what Beloso has. He isn't striking out, and while he isn't lifting the ball, he is squaring everything up. More baserunners = more chaos for opponents. And despite if he plays 1B or DH, the team defense is improved because Jobert isn't in there. I think Beloso in the lineup with Jones or Kling is your sweet spot at the moment.
- Gavin Dugas is getting over shadowed, and despite a 3k G3, continues to be a nuisance for opponents. Found a way on base 3x in G1. Two huge swings in G2 & G3. He finds a way to kill you in multiple ways. He is looking like an early ALL SEC guy.
DEFENSE / BASERUNNING
- Despite a few baserunning blunders in G1, I thought they ran the bases really, really well. Coaching has been really good too. They are aggressive and it went in their favor just about all day yesterday. Again, dont let a hiccup in G1 fool you.
- I think LSU showed a few warts on defense, but even with that, they made ARK look like a little league team. So that is a great sign. And obviously the pitching can erase mistakes. Few balls on the infield I thought could have been handled (White/Beloso). Think White misplayed a foul pop and Thompson was no where to be found to assist. Pearson, after that great throw, misplayed the liner out into RF. Would have like to see him make that play. Jobert not great catching and throwing on Sac Fly.

Herring could be the real deal. If we can consistently get quality relief innings from him it would be huge. I agree on keeping Edwards where he is as well. Really nice to have that insurance policy if a starter gets in trouble

Damn son! Look at you with the Sunday morning column lol.
Great analysis and I agree on pretty much everything, I just really want to see A.) Edwards get the Sunday starter nod going forward and B.) Beloso stay in the lineup esp against left handed starters. He bring the same consistent veteran reliability that Dugas does.
ETA: let herring hold down midweek starter spot and keep shores for weekend long relief.

In the SEC, you need reliable people in the bullpen too. I like Edwards and Herring being the go to guys (and Auck) when we need a hold. It’s okay to let Hurd work through the struggles. Shores should be next in line to get him SEC starting experience.

You are much better articulating baseball concepts than football. And I mean that with no bank handed complimenting.
Good shite.
Good shite.

I think he should keep Edwards where he is. If you have a healthy Ack, then you have three stoppers out of the pen with Ack, Edwards, Herring. Throw in Shores as well.
Let Floyd and Hurd do their thing. I think you give Hurd another shot to work out things. if he falters, move Shores to Sunday.
Jobert doesn't provide enough consistency at the plate. Right now, I think Beloso is the first choice into that lineup spot. As much as I love the power of Jones, he strikes out too much. He did have a nice AB where he earned a walk after being down 0-2, 1-2. Kling is TBD but he will be needed for post season. My reasoning is that I want the bottom of the lineup to put the ball in play/get on base instead of striking out because you want to turn over the lineup as many times as possible to take advantage of the insane talent 1-5 in the order.
Having Pearson come back to life is huge for this offense.

Appreciate the summary, especially since I couldn't watch but 4-5 innings all weekend.

I enjoy these updates, Lester.
(Crews and White ) . Ridiculous.

Yep. Figured it was only a matter of time. Hosing that guy at 2nd base was awesome as well

Some good points
,
I think We need to looks at Little as more of a long reliever than a close or just a 9th inning guy because he seems to have issues out of the stretch

I love Edwards in the pen, where he can impact multiple games.

Great post again.
It’s becoming evident that Jobert and Jones cannot be in this lineup at the same time. Having Beloso make contact consistently has really evaluated the bottom of the lineup.

You have to love the role they are able to put him in as a secondary guy in this lineup. Takes a lot of pressure off of him.
He has been in the middle of a lot of action, too. He takes good at bats, and has been barreling the ball up frequently, despite the barrage of LHP they have been seeing

I’m not ready to give up on Hurd starting yet.
And I want Little to throw every time we have a giant lead. This kid has an arm. He needs to fine tune his control.

Thompson with some stellar play. Dude has been legit. I’m guessing he didn’t see the pop up because he really did not make an effort on the play and the ball landed closer to him then to White.
