Report: Rams looking to interview Cortez Hankton for OC

quote:

Hankton just won the CFP National Championship with Georgia, also serving as that program’s pass game coordinator and receivers coach. Hankton had been there since 2018, starting as the receiver’s coach before adding pass game coordinator to his duties in 2019.

A New Orleans native, Hankton left Georgia to be a part of Brian Kelly’s first staff at LSU. Now he could be making the jump to the NFL.

Hankton, 41, played 46 games for the Jaguars from 2003-2006, entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Texas Southern. He caught 34 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns in his career.

But Hankton also crossed paths with Rams head coach Sean McVay. He was on the Buccaneers roster in 2008, though he was injured. That was the year McVay joined Jon Gruden’s staff as an offensive assistant.

What does the "OC" do for these teams where the HC controls the offense and calls all the plays? I know there's value, otherwise they wouldn't have the position, but they aren't filling a traditional coordinator role for sure

After the last round of NFL HC hires I think there will be alot of minority interviews for future opening for HC and other coaching gigs.

Ummmm, on one hand, to lose him would hurt.

On the other hand, the Super Bowl champs have interest in LSU's WR coach...wow! Right guy on staff.

They don’t have to interview any black candidates for a coordinator spot by rule, do they ?

If they did feel like they had to interview a minority then they would still interview the best minority for the job , in their eyes.

It shows he’s respected by Mcvay even if it’s a token interview because they could have went with any other minority

The Rooney rule also applies to all coordinator hires.

That would be a huge jump to go from a WR coach in college to the OC of the reigning Super Bowl champ in the NFL. Not to disparage Hankton’s skills or his potential (both large), but this has Rooney Rule compliance written all over it.

I’d rather if he told them to get fricked.

Great news!

Rams unlikely to hire him.

Will help LSU tremendously when he is recruiting.

Why a random college coach though? Seems like there are plenty minority candidates in the NFL that could be interviewed. Seems like they locked in to him for a reason. Not just to meet Rooney Rule.

What if McVay knows he runs the offense but sees an opportunity to groom a minority to eventually take over as HC. Goodell helped him win a SB now he’s doing Goodell a solid here. Might be far fetched but anything is possible these days.
