I don't think he's that great. He's also not that bad. He fits in fine where he is.

My big issue with Chavis is his system is very reliant on the front four to bring the pressure, but when he doesn't have aa DL capable of doing so consistently, he doesn't really devise other ways to bring pressure

Chavis as DC > Bill King as radio host.

If you look at total defense our rankings arent that impressive, except for 2011. I like Chavis though.

He also plays cover 2 a lot in 22 sets. Like against Georgia last year.

He said he could never stop Spurrier during his heyday at Florida.

Chavis became DC at Tennessee in 1995. That year, they gave up 62 to Florida. However, it is notable that after 1995, Chavis never let Spurrier outscore his season average again while at Tennessee. That's right, Chavis held Spurrier below season averages from 1996-2001.

From 2005-2008, Chavis held Spurrier to below season averages 3 out of 4 times. The exception is 2008, and that is the year HC Phil Fulmer got canned along with everybody else.

Chavis and Spurrier have also faced off once since Chavis moved to LSU. In 2012, Chavis held Spurrier to 10 pts. below South Carolina's average in a win.

In summary, Chavis has held Spurrier below season averages 10 of 12 times.

Sorry for the novel. /tldr

I agree with this 100%. the linebackers were a bit exposed this year because of the lack of push from the front 4.

I honestly believe the front 4 this year will be better.

In summary, Chavis' teams are 7-10 against Spurrier's teams, all time. But Chavis held Spurrier below season averages 13 of 17 times.

So he gets no credit for getting that talent to his school and developing them into NFL players?

I was about to post this. He is just the best coach in the history of USCe ever that's it.

It's not like he's doing it with chopped liver though .

The job Chavis did last year was outstanding! He lost an NFL defense almost and still had a solid defense last year. Without Chavis last year, LSU couldve taken a big step backwards.
Miles continues to say Chavis is one of the most talented coaches, he's ever been around.

Yo Bill, how many championships has Spurrier won at SC without all that elite talent?

How many did Saban win at Mich St without it?

I see a trend forming.

Perhaps there is a reason Sirius reduced Bill King's show from 3 hours to 1 hour.

King also said that Chavis is made to look better than he is due to the talent at LSU

find me a DC that has a top 20 defense year after year that does it without talent. Wonder what his thoughts are regarding Kirby Smart

i hate when people (including idiots here) use this line of reasoning. its like they think these 18 year old kids can just walk on the field saturday and win games in the SEC with no coaching, practice, scheming, or film study

it's not just that. you can't have an elite defense without elite talent. using that has a reason chavis is overrated is incredibly ignorant and short-sided

Damn LSU has done a lot of winning with average coaches, shite we've won more games now then when we had saban, Fisher and muschamp. Les really is a miracle worker for being an average coach with average coordinators. Yeah we have talent, but in any given cycle at least one team in our division out recruits us. Hell one year we had a top 10 class but were like the 7th best class in the sec.

I disagree, we have all seen us in the mustang packages, bringing pressure on the outside with a DB. Now I can't say much about his tenure at tenn other than they were good up until the end. But he's been great at lsu and we've found a way to put a solid d on the field with the talent available to us. Again I'm nit seeing these big dlunemen in la. We have the tweener guys like mingo and beckwith, then loads of athletes. Quitnen Thomas was a de in hs. Really only Anthony Johnson comes to mind over the last several cycles. And he didn't live up to it. But cgavis has found a scheme that works with our speed and our ability as a state to churn out defensive backs.
