Overall, our QBs combined for

59%
24 TDs / 9 INTs
3122 yards

Against a 10 game SEC schedule, with 2 being true freshman. This kind of production would have been unimaginable most years under Leslie. Project those numbers over a full season and it’s statistically the second best QB season in program history.

Offense was never the problem this year. We need some minor improvements in the red zone TD ratio. But overall the offense was surprisingly good especially with true freshmen QBs.

Taking out TJ, Max and Myles combined for 19TDs/4 INTs in about 6.5 games. Burrow had 16/5 in 2018.

The offense was on the field a lot this year too. Much in part because the defense was either forcing a turnover or giving up a quick touchdown.

Taking out TJ

In Finley's defense, 3 of his 5 starts came against the best passing defenses LSU faced this year. Auburn, Alabama, Texas A&M.

Against middle of the pack pass defenses, Finley was 44-63 (0.698), 536 yards, 4TD, 1 INT, and only 1 sack.

Max Johnson's biggest advantage at the moment is 2-0 and the "eye test". I think that gives him a leg up going into the spring, but it's clearly an open competition.

We were 102nd in 3rd down percentage, 68th is red zone scoring percentage, 104th in red zone TD percentage..

It needs more than some minor improvements. Those areas crushed LSU in the Miles era and were a weakness in Ensminger’s game. Love the guy, but we need some fresh blood.

This is about the decisions made with the given playbook. That same playbook allowed us to do much better on 3rd downs the year before. The decision-maker was different though (Brady).

The decisions Brady made were about opportunities and execution. Clearly Ensminger was more conservative and saw those same opportunities plays as risky.

For sure, but if he can’t even get decent efficiency with the same playbook then we need someone else to run it.

For reference, we were 57th in 3rd down conversions and 119th in red zone TD percentage in 2018. Ensminger is just not great at calling plays in the red zone.

We were 28-34 RZ scoring, if we were to score 1-2 more times and change some of the <30 yd FGs into TDs we are top 50 in every stat. hindsight says we score a td against Mizzou with a qb sneak, the holding vs Florida in the 3rd quarter is fixable, and the int vs ole miss is a freshman mistake.
These are minor improvements, and that's what is needed.
You also cant overlook the RZ adjustments Burrow made on top of the calls brady made. SR(RS) vs true freshmen making protection adjustments is crucial.

This is the issue. People want to talk about play calls, which is subjective. How many successful 3rd down and RZ play calls did Chase, Burrow, Clyde, JJ convert that the current cast of freshmen and sophomores failed to convert?

How many times did a freshman QB check down to a receiver and fail to see an open receiver for a first down or touchdown? How many drops did we have?

Compare that to the 4 best seasons by an LSU QB not named Burrow in the last 20 seasons

Davey
59%
18/10
3347

Mauck
64%
28/14
2825

Russell
68%
28/8
3129

Mettenberger
65%
22/8
3082

Not shabby in comparison.

Note: pretty ridiculous Mett only threw 22 TDs that final season.

The OLine and running game needs massive improvement.

Because the defense never stayed on the field very long and gave us lots of opportunities. Also lacked a run game. Not a formula for winning football.

With two true frosh carrying most of the load at QB, and a lot of young guys at WR, this is pretty damn good.
