Projecting LSU baseball’s 2027 lineup with only one question mark remaining

Jay Johnson didn’t mess around.
With about a month before the MLB draft, the LSU baseball coach already has filled out most of his starting lineup for next season, adding four bats out of the transfer portal and persuading star shortstop Steven Milam to return to school for his senior year.
Here’s an early projection of what the order will look like, how all of the new pieces fit together and a deeper look at the one hole remaining in the lineup for 2027.

Mason Braun, 1B
Cade Arrambide, C
Steven Milam, SS
Omar Serna, DH
Bino Watters, LF
Dawson Park, 3B
Cade Kurland, 2B
Jason Wachs, RF
TBD, CF

If LSU were to play tomorrow, center field likely goes to William Patrick. As a true freshman, he earned more playing time after Jake Brown’s injury and used his athleticism to his advantage in the field. But he’s still a raw player who needs more at-bats to firmly earn an everyday role.
Besides Patrick, LSU has commitments from four high school signees who have enough speed to play center field. Malachi Washington, Anthony Murphy, Nathaneal Davis and Wessley Roberson are all strong athletes with the potential to be top of the order hitters someday. The issue is that there’s a strong chance three of them get scooped up by Major League Baseball next month in the draft.

Splitting hairs, but i cant see milam hitting in that spot in the lineup and watters two spots below them, id switch that. Other than that, makes some sense

I think Wachs has the potential to play CF for us too. Maybe not his most ideal spot, but if Jay wants to put experience in that position while letting Patrick or one of the other younguns develop a bit more I could see it early season.
It doesn't seem like we have a natural 3b (or at least anyone who's spent considerable time there) but we have a bunch of MIF options so you kind of ASSume one of them can cut it over there.
Assuming we can find a good compromise of fielding and hitting in CF, I think we'll be able to get someone to fit at 3B. Catcher is the weird spot that we have tons of hitting talent but the defense back there was lacking. Hopefully with more reps over the summer and ideally our pitchers refamiliarizing themselves with the strike zone we'll be in good shape defensively.
At a minimum we should be significantly better than this year. Right? Right???

Kurland and Wachs are leadoff candidates.
I see several possible scenarios.
Serna can play DH/1B when not catching.
Wachs can play CF/RF.
Braun can play 1B/RF.
If Patrick doesn't hit, or someone else develops at DH/1B/RF I could see shuffling between Serna Wachs and Braun to accommodate the last person.

I think Park could play CF.
SS to CF & vice versa is something that has been pretty common in pro ball

Pretty sure I saw somewhere that Park has played some 3B in the past

The discussion of lineups is so silly to me. Jay will use damn near every combination that makes any sense at all by the time we get to the postseason

I’m sure he could play 3b
Or you could get Ruckert & Pearson in the lineup instead
