Please talk to your sons and daughters about the Internet.

It only gets more complex from here.
Snares at every corner.
It used to be, “Dave, aren’t you glad the Internet wasn’t around when you streaked the Chi O house and got locked in the attic?”
Now you can be 100% innocent and still get perpetrated.
If this is some fear-mongering shite, I apologize. But at least you now know, if it is true.
I do t have an insta acct so I guess I cannot embed this.
Additionally, this happened to someone I know personally. His son didn’t do it on day one, it went on for weeks and he did the unthinkable.

My kids play Roblox and Minecraft. I removed the ability to use the chat function. However my son went from doing “obbies” to shooter games that looked like MW.

Not now they are just getting pics off the web and ai-slopping some porn on these kids for extortion.

That's not what happened. High school kid thought he was chatting with a girl and sent here nude photos.
Girl ended up being two guys who blackmailed him for $1,000. They threatened to send the photos to his parents, friends, etc.
Kid committed suicide within a few hours.

There's a "cult" called 764 that does exactly this, but I believe they use Twitch more often than Roblox or Minecraft. Majority of the people in it are teens that target young girls. The stuff that they have done proves that evil does exist in this world.

My friend was telling me the other day about something that happened recently to a family he knows.
A picture that the mom posted on facebook of her young daughter in front of their house for her first day of school was taken by some sicko who used AI to make explicit photos of her, and then tried to blackmail her/the family.
This is why I wish my family and friends would cease posting pictures and videos of their children on social media. Its not worth it. There are a lot of bad people scanning social media for disgusting stuff like this. Don't make it easier for them. Protect yourself.

Teach your kids to have common sense and know right from wrong.
I grew up with the internet at my disposal. I have seen literally the darkest and deepest parts of the internet. I actually went to the Silk Road through the tor browser when I was 12 years old.
I was curious but not stupid. I learned that from my father.

I feel like younger folks have gotten really careless about that sort of thing. I remember in college (2007-2018) getting girls the same age as me to send nudes was like pulling teeth unless she was a major hoe. When I was 25 I dated a 20 year old for a few months and she would randomly send nudes almost every day. My nephews are in their 20s now and they say girls are sending them all the time.

I played a shite ton of Nintendo. Never sent nudes to anyone and never got duped. Doubt video games are the culprit.

Haidt says we wildly overprotected against IRL "risk" and catastrophically under protected children from online risk. I think that's right.
Candidly I don't think the interests (gaming, anime, etc.) are the issues* - the issue is kids finding their community and peer group largely or solely through the internet.
Things online are cheap, frictionless, limitless, which strips relationships of a ton of healthy "stuff" that is formative for creating mature and balanced adults.
*that said, I think steering your kids away from such things is absolutely rational for most.

Our big thing to watch out for was the pinball machine at the Ice House Cafe. There were nickel side bets going on that I could not comprehend.
Later on into my early twenties, there was the local pool hall. My wife's uncle asked me if I wanted to play a round and asked me how much we were playing for, so when I answered, "for funsies", he muttered an unintelligible swear word and threw his cue down. He could have cleaned me out.
