What is better for both the schools and players? Is what is better for one school or player the same for all schools or players?

This is the current landscape, the players have a great deal of power. As long as that is the case, the portal will not significantly change.

Okay first of all I am not arguing what our current state of College Football is. We all know the players have been given a lot more power and freedom.

But my concern is more on the hundreds of players if not thousands who actually sit in the portal and never find a roster. I think there needs to be a better system in place to protect those kids from not being able to play. Cause even though there is a landscape where players just jump right in at the drop of the hat, there is also players being asked to leave (Deion Sanders being just 1 example) and bringing in players out of the portal.

Also I have always felt there should only be 1 transfer allowed without a redshirt but I think transferring within the same Conference should just not be allowed without having to use a redshirt even if it is your first time transferring.

Now NIL is going to have to play into this as well because as long as NIL is setup as just a pay for play and not how it was meant then this free agency is always going to be the case.

The portal should not be an option until their junior year.

Exactly.

If you're going to get paid like a professional, then the scholarship signing should be a contract … a two year contract. This still allows for "free agency" after two years.

2) What college freshman (non-athletes) doesn't have doubts or questions that first year or two? But if a University is investing millions of dollars into the program you signed up for, you should be able to commit for two years.

Go back to implementing the 1 year sitting out after a transfer. I mean how long before kids are in the portal as new signee's before fall season starts. I know being sarcastic but...

That is a valid concern. Unfortunately, it is difficult to convince players that it is in their best interest to not transfer. I think it eventually works itself out as the realities of the portal become more and more obvious. Perhaps some sort of third party or even an NCAA group can be set up to give impartial advice before a player enters the portal? Kind of like the draft grade group. I just can't figure out the logistics of that in my mind.

They should've taken a year of eligibility but did away with the sit out (which they did) when they first started these rule changes. Assuming they didn't drop to a lower class.

It wouldn't impact most players who aren't going to play 4 anyway, but would've impacted the receiving teams as some form of consequence.

I’m not opposed to that rule. I actually kind of like it.

Or maybe just

You can transfer and play automatically but you lose a year of eligibility regardless if it’s redshirt or not unless it’s as a graduate transfer.

The welfare of the player is more important than how much you enjoy watching them play on saturdays.
well, football is entertainment, and exists mainly because fans watch and pay for it, both in person and on TV.

Do we want the players taken care of? Of course.

But if your only concern is the welfare of the players, and not the welfare of the overall sport in general, you'll kill the golden goose.

Remember, ultimately it's entertainment for the fans, paid for by the fans.

After a second transfer, players should have to sit a year before returning to P5 roster.

my post said nothing about immediate eligibility. It was about the OP's silly rule about a transfer voiding the redshirt.

2015 Burrow redshirted at OSU
2016 Burrow played at OSU
2017 Burrow played at OSU
2018 Burrow grad transfer and played at LSU
2019 Burrow played at LSU

Under the OP's rule, Burrow's eligibility was exhausted after 2018.

The RS would in fact be voided under the new Portal rules, which have been in place for 4 years. Graduate Transfers are not the same as portal guys transferring. My take was I don't think Burrow, who got a degree from Ohio State should be compared to the portal guys transferring.

The Rules the OP is talking about are in effect what the NCAA passed just today. If you do 2 portal transfers, you have to sit out a year and thus loose a year of eligibity.

My point was that Joe Burrow when he transferred to LSU had a degree in hand, which puts him in a different group of players who are going to the Portal, some several times (i.e. JT Daniels has hit portal 3 times). JT Daniels situation under the new portal rules will not happen.

They should lose a season or not be allowed to enter the upcoming NFL draft when they quit/opt out in a season, EVEN THE BOWL GAMES... Take that you quitters!

These baws were not quitting their teams and bowl games in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, and 2010 to about 2018-2019 when all these softies started opting out. So, why is it OK in 2018 till now? The schools gave them their platform to shine and get noticed to get drafted, so they jump ship for these players, the school and the fans... Can't play 1 more game?
