The portal giveth and the portal taketh. Makes recruiting not as much fun to keep up with each cycle now.

Yes, the great ones absolutely play early. Which is why I said the majority of HS recruits instead of all of them.

But for the 3 and 4 star kids that would otherwise be asked to redshirt, what's the benefit in their eyes?

Why not go to a smaller school with an immediate chance to play, develop, and build your NIL brand?

Also, as the head coach of a major program, wouldn't you rather fill the majority of your roster with proven college talent that wouldn't be as inclined to transfer again without penalty vs some HS potential that might bounce after 4 months on campus?

Core players will stick with you and others will get in where they fit in.

Can't see a problem with a greater distribution of talent and an opportunity for a better experience for the athletes. I don't wish being stuck in shite situation on anyone. Just thinking back on people like Russell Shepard, and other talented players who were scheme exclusions or were doghoused for whatever reason.

EDIT: This new normal may also only last for 5 years until there are enough examples of "grass ain't always greener" --- we shall see! But in the short term, buckle up and embrace it.
It will ease up in 2025 when the covid year players start running out of eligibility. Right now you have an entire extra class competing for the same number of spots, so opportunities are scarce. And the younger players are forced to compete against players with more experience than normal.

If the "covid year" didn't happen, JD would be out of eligibility and preparing for the draft right now.

To use the Tommy White example to explain how this can “ruin” the sport - imagine that Alex Bregman had transferred out his senior year and we pulled in a replacement shortstop from, say, Southern Miss. what kind of legacy would he have? How much fan enthusiasm will evaporate over time as this occurs with 3-5 players (that people care about) every year?

As I said in other threads: the top 10 CFB players we portal in will see the field faster than the top 10 freshmen in a signing class, year after year. The fun of recruiting and being excited about signing classes is over - we should be more excited for our “free agent signings” every year. Kinda sad. If it weren’t for the band and Golden Girls I’d just stick to NFL

Parents have been pulling their kids on and off travel and little league teams for decades to get their kids more playing time. This shouldn't surprise anyone.

I am not against college athletes transferring. They are different than regular students given a scholarship because most are heavily recruited. Which means schools pay heavily to get them, then they are given a free scholarship, and a lot of other stuff now days too.
I'm not against them transferring. I'm against no rules for it all.

College athletes are students yes, and not professionals.

If things stay on this track, why even have recruiting?

It’s about time. Couldn’t be happier about these changes. But I’m not a communist and I’m all for people have freedom and choices.

Coaches leave and take other jobs. Position coaches do too. And Coordinators as well. Staffers leave for other jobs and sometimes it's a lateral move. Kids are going to transfer out, and some are going to transfer in. Everyone involved is trying to make decisions that are best for them. I'm not worried about LSU Football right now. We're in a real good spot right now and we've got Brian Kelly and a good staff in place that will manage the roster as well as anyone.

Bingo.

If you have no issue with coaches taking other jobs every year because it’s better for them but you have a problem with the players being allowed to do the same, that makes you an a-hole.

I don’t care what the outcome of this is. It could destroy LSU sports completely or college sports completely and I’m 100% fine with that. There is no logical or legal reason you can give to deny these players the right to transfer to other schools or to make money off their own likeness and name. They have signed no contract with these schools that are binding for more than a year (and this works both ways btw) so they owe the school nothing after that year (nor does the school owe them anything).

Your only other option is for this to become considered an actual job working for and being paid for by the schools (much like an NFL team) but then the players would (and absolutely should) unionize and the schools would not only be paying salaries to these players but insurance, taxes, social security, etc. you then run into the problem of how can you limit the number of employees a school can have along with how long they can be an employee at your school. You’d have to do away with the 5 to play 4 rule and you could technically have 35 year olds playing college sports. It would create a huge mess any other way.

No, it wasn’t. That’s your opinion but it’s not the opinion of the players I can assure you. It was highly unfair (and honestly should have been illegal) for them to ever tell these players they couldn’t get paid for their image and likeness. And don’t give me the “but thuh scholarship” bullshite excuse. A scholarship is one of the most overpriced overrated things in the world. College should never cost as much as it does now and it’s 100% a scam on the youth of America. There is ZERO reason for anyone to need college for 90% of the jobs in the United States. Most could easily be apprenticeship jobs (like they used to be) but corporations got greedy as frick and stopped investing in their employees and customers and started investing in their gif damn shareholders instead. It has ruined this country.

My solution has been to completely check out for the off-season. I used to read Dandy Don and the recruiting board here daily, and I mean daily. Now, I couldn't care less. All I watch for now is the kids who I expected to bolt that stay, and I like watching them.

Also, I have a whole host of "you're a fricking professional, play like it!" variations to tell at the players, or at the TV if I'm not at the game.

But overall, I have just found other things to do. I was always drawn more to college because players were your guys, there was very little defection, but now it's even worse than the pros.

True. We welcomed Mr. Joe Burrow with open arms.

That said, in my day, a kid transferring from LSU to Ole Miss is like a U.S. Admiral AWOL to the Russian Navy.

I'm sure we're so pumped that Tommy White decided to be a "traitor" to NC State, right? So... why the raging at Walker Howard?

Tommy Tanks didn't transfer to UNC, but I agree with you nonetheless...

CFB has always been a mess but we love it and that’s why it’s never boring like the NFL can be.
but the problem now is the immediate play transfer and NIL.

So now, every player is basically a free agent and roster turnover is massive. No one knows who’s on their team.

That’s far different than what college football used to be, warts and all.

So... you're view is that a college athlete should never be able to switch schools?

Nobody is saying a player should not be able to transfer, but there needs to be a reasonable commitment by the player. A two year commitment without sitting out after a transfer seems reasonable. A player right now can show up in August and leave in December, 4 months. NFL players are bound by contracts. People keep bringing up coaches and staffers can transfer at will. They can but there are contract ramifications that come into play. NCAA players are bound by practically nothing.
