We were very top heavy in our pitching staff this past season. Looks like we should have better depth next year.

At this time last year we said the exact same thing

Good. Rather have a couple arms too many than not enough of them.

I’m betting Ryler Smart isn’t fighting for junk innings. Dude is low mid 90’s from the left side and was a major recruit to UT.

Skip said no matter how much depth you think you have at best you have 8 guys.

So the task is to try and identify who those top 8 will be.

1. Casan Evans - Starter
2. Cooper Willaims - Probable starter
3. Deven Sheerin - He could be #3
4. Jaden Noot - not going from Sunday guy to no role
5. Maverick Rizy
6. Gavin Guidry
7. Cooper Williams
8. Zac Cowan
9. William Schmidt
10. Santiago Garcia
11. Marcos Paz
12. Danny Lachenmeyer

At the end of the season half of these guys will be minor contributors due to injury or lack of control. And that will leave important roles for some of those other guys.

Some of the incoming transfers will get more than junk innings. Hard to predict Smart coming off of an injury. Hard to predict the incoming freshmen but I could see Ricken getting meaningful innings. He throws strikes, already touching -95, and has the frame to sit there and top in the upper 90’s. I agree with Paz. He probably gets drafted on Sunday if not for his injury.

If you take out the game vs. UALR that LSU lost, LSU played 90 innings. Those 5 guys combined to pitch 78.6 of them (87%)

78.6 innings?

You mean 80?

So 88.89%?

And the thing that you can't tell now is what Skip and Jay look so closely at over the year..... who can do it in nut cutting time of high pressure that will translate to Regionals and Omaha. That is a big thing that narrows that field.

You can look like a beast in bullpens, scrimmages, etc.......but to be in that top group that will be used at the end of the year the mental part has to be proven first and often

I'm still high on Schmidt. There's still a good chance he can put it together like Anderson did and be a starter next year. People forget that Kade had an ERA in the 20s during SEC play last year. And Schmidt was the #1 RHP in the country in 2024. He can't be easily written off.

You could probably add Dax Dathe, he was the ace of the Angelo St. staff with really good numbers.

This is said during the fall every year and it never pans out.

There will inevitably be a couple of season ending injuries and a couple of guys who just don't live up to the hype.

Schmidt went through some rough times this year, but each time he came through and came up stronger… and, yes, I'll admit my serious local bias, but improvement is improvement… just think of the pitching talent we have sent up mlb way in the last few years… and then to have this depth and this strength in place and incoming… and remember… 6 more months for coach jay johnson… why, thats almost an eternity!…

If we are being honest about Schmidt he has a long way to go.

The spin rates that were reported made us think his breaking ball would be a plus plus type of pitch. That wasn’t the case. And the fastball was pretty hittable.

Obviously, there’s tons of room for improvement for a young guy.
